iPod 1st Gen Ipod (scroll wheel) hangs on Restore

I recently acquired a 10gb 1st Gen Ipod with firewire. It was running fine, but after attempting to restore it back to factory so that I set it up as I saw it I followed the instructions to restore it. It worked perfectly all the way through the process up to about the 90% mark where it hangs and does not progress further. It keeps saying "almost done restoring" and will not advance. If you try to cancel out, of course it tells you it cannot do so.

I am using an old dual core machine with XP SP2 on it, the software is an updated version of the ipod software and updater software. If I try to use the older version, it fails and says the software is not correct. If I try to use iTunes, the ipod is not recognized. Even through older versions of the iTunes software.

officially the iPod 1G s with scroll wheel are Mac-only... so i bet you should better try on an Apple computer!

Yeah, I thought about that. There are a couple of issues.. The person I obtained it from had formatted it for PC, which should also be readable in OSX, but I cannot find anything that will recognize the unit as an Ipod even in disc mode. The only place I could gain any ground was on the old PC. Like I said, on the PC it works fine, recognizes it fine, and it even begins the restore process it just sticks at the end. It does not progress any further. It was working fine before it hung on restore, now I have a nice exclamation mark folder icon.

Any other thoughts? If I dig up the Mac version of the tools for this, will it run in Snow Leopard? Obviously they will be written for OS9, but it is not recognizable in iTunes at this time.

had no problem with mine i acquired a while ago. Had also been formatted for windows, i put it into disk mode (hold menu and play/pause after reboot), connected to my MacBook running OS X 10.6 and recovered it using the current version of iTunes. No need for usage of older tools, even these iPods work easily with iTunes 9.

even before the attempted restore, this ipod never showed in iTunes on my Mac. Any other advice?

And by disk mode you mean restart it with play/pause and menu, then when the apple logo is on the screen press and hold the forward and back buttons correct?
