Hi All,

I've been sitting on my 1st gen MacPro for awhile now. Debating whether to sell it or turn it into something else.

I've thought about a home media server or a slave for 3D with several GPU cards.

I've found to run really hot, and I don't know if it's the current graphic cards in there or what.

If anyone has suggestions/insight I would love to hear them.

KJ

I have the same sitting around with a raid card and two drives (waiting for my data transfer)....what's going to be your pipeline? gigabit card? 10GB card? seems like it gets expensive to get some practical use out of it? I may be missing something.

I use mine as a storage server and media hub for Plex with my Apple TV.

It's running Yosemite now and goes great.

When I can, I'm going to throw some money at it and upgrade to 5355 CPUs and some more RAM.

As long as the logic board is ok, then knock yourself out and turn it into a machine that would give modern Mac Pros a run for their money. All the info you need is on these hallowed pages.

for media server think about getting a nas...cMP are power hogs and surely running it 24/7 will run up the electric bill with its 980watt power supply.

Yes you can use it for cuda and open cl, No limitation vs more recent mp same results
