Last week I order a 17” (refurbished from Apple with Apple Care) iMac for my family. We are all switching from a PC. I am hoping that the transition will be somewhat painless as my whole family will be looking to me for the answers as they work with the new system. The problem is I am pretty clueless when it comes to Macs and OS X. Can some of you give me some important / general configuration tips or lead me to some good articles that will save me from newbie type mistakes?

Pshh, maunals and guides, who needs them. OSX is easy enough to learn on your own, and a little help from here;

Thanks. I am not really looking for manuals and guides. I know Apple has a pretty good web site and I am fairly decent with computers. I am looking more for configuration tips like should I set up an adminsitrator account and then seperate accounts for each family member (i know yes), how do you configure your systems for multiple mail and iPod accounts, do you install all programs in the Administrator account, what types of programs and files are good to keep on the dock, any security tips, etc... I guess I am looking less for beginners "how to" guide and more for a guide that gives specific system configuration advice.

i would look into reinstalling the OS from the disc right out of the gate and to get rid of programs and other stuff you'll never use. this can free up a lot of HD space that might be valuable in the future. this way you won't have to back anything up
