Hi all......This is my first post to the forum. I have enjoyed everyone's opinions, and i'd like to post my first impressions of my new 15" MBP, which i received yesterday.

First off, the unit look very similar to the powerbook, as everyone knows. The new enhancements are definetely really cool, especially the power adapter and video at the top of the screen. This has tremendous potential for future use, as i think it will be more commonplace to use video chat in the future. I like the evolutionary improvements of the machine.

The unit is definetely super fast, much faster than my 15" 1.5 ghz powerbook. My only qualms if any are the heat of the unit, especially after more than 30 minutes of use, and especially on the bottom of the unit. I was looking at movie trailers in bed last night and after about 20 minutes the unit was positiviely burning hot. It could have definetely caused 2nd degree burns if I had pushed the issue. I have heard other users make similar comments, with some saying their units are "cool" which I find to be an exageration, I don't see how this is possible. My unit was built to order, in week 25, so i assume it has all the updates, ie. logic board, so i assume that this is the normal behavior for the unit. i was going to try the ILAP to see if this makes the unit more comfortable on my lap, because without pants on, my legs would be burnt if i were wearing shorts. I don't recall this to be of the same magnitude with the powerbook. I just installed all available updates that were available, which had no change in the heat situation. My power settings are set to 'normal'.

If any has any coments or suggestions regarding the above comments I'd appreciate them, or if any prospective buyers have any questions, i'd be glad to help.

Best, AL

well i suppose that when i went to the apple store in king of prussia, pa i was thinking that the 17" model was the one that i wanted. As mentioned, i had the 15" pb and loved it. The 17" does have some advantages, namely an 8x superdrive, an extra usb port, a bigger screen, etc. Plus the 7200 rpm hd was not an additional cost like with the smaller mbp, which i wanted to have upgraded. The 17" cost a few hundred more, but my main reason was that the 17" unit was just too big, it weighed nearly 7lbs, it would have been more bulky for transport.

So i opted for the more compact 15", and i think it is just the perfect size for home/business use b/c of it's size and portability.

Hope this helps.............AL

RE: temps, I have noticed Rosetta'd apps really hike up the system temps due to the higher usage.

The other issue I've had at times is Finder using 100% of system resources. It's rare but it has happened to be on a few occasions. In this case temps in the high 80C's are not uncommon if left. Logging off cures this.

As more apps go Universal I think many will probably start to report that their Macbook/Pros cook less. I don't know what apps you were using but it may have been a factor. I'm not saying the MBP's are naturally cool running - I don't think they are but there's a huge impact in system temps between Rosetta and native. And the funny thing is of course as more apps go native, even though they may be pretty acceptable now they'll actually get faster for us. A rare case of computers becoming faster as they get older :D
