1st Time Owner PB 15", several questions:

Just got the PB last night, but had several questions that have crossed my mind:

1) I ordered the 100 GB version, however the Profiler TOSHIBA says the capacity is 93.16GB with 80.99GB available. Is this normal for a 100GB upgrade, or am I searching the wrong area?

2) HAve read that apple uses different hard drives/DVD with different reviews of them. Mine is a TOSHIBA MK1032GAX with a MATSHITADVD-R UJ-846. Any thoughts on these from knowledgealbe people?

3) What is the best way to get my MP3s off my PC and onto my PB (approx 17GB)?

1. The hard drive thing is normal, OS X takes a lot of space and hard drives are never full size. E.g. my 80GB is really 78 or so. That's the hard drive life.

2. Dual layer DVD burner. And no firmware out there, so if you get asked to change regions.. be careful!

3. Hmm good question. What's the program you were using on your PC?

Was using iTunes on the PC as well, just trying to avoid burning 20 CDs if at all possbile. Which leads to a whole other set of questions like:
1) How to get my iPOD to work with my new PB (was Mac formatted on anthorher MAC)?
2) How to get the music off my iPod and onto my new PB

Regarding the DVD player, anyway to change regions as I bought the PB from the US, but live in Germany?

If your iPod is still PC formatted, download a free program called "Senuti." It allows you to move your music off the iPod onto the computer and also lets you keep your playlists and stuff intact. So just load all your music onto your PC formatted iPod, plug it into your Mac and use Senuti to download the music off it. Then you can either reformat the iPod to Mac if you wish or leave it PC formatted and use it with both platforms.

I have about an even mix of US and Australian DVD's and use a program called VLC to watch the movies. It's not as good as DVD player but it doesn't look at the region codes and lets me play both types without having to swap regions.

Both programs are available from VersionTracker or just google the names.

Your ipod should still work in your mac, as Fat32 file system is recognised within OSX without a problem. You will still be able to use itunes etc... No format necessary unless you really want to.

Also if you have your PC Still. You could just use your ipod as a external HD and drag the contents of your music folder over to your mac.

However Mac formated drives are not recognised on a pc....

Its because HD manafacturers measure their HD by the power of 1. 1000k + 1meg , but in reality its 1014 or there abouts to 1meg. 14k may not seem much, but as the size increases expenentially to 80gig - 100gig the actual real size we get drops by a signifanct margin. Hence 80 = 75-77 gig, 100=92-94gig... A bit of a con, but an old one...

Close, you got the right method but your numbers are a bit wrong.

Generally you lose about 7% due to the difference between advertised GB's and actual computer GB's. It basically the difference between 10^9 (advertised gigabytes) and 2^30 (I think it's 2^30 that represents actual computer read gigabytes).
