Hey, I haven't used my Apple TV (first gen) in a year since I was out of the country, anyway updates the software and re-synced my MacBook Pro to it.

When I go to play an episode of (anything) for example Friends (which I converted with handbrake) I only get sound but no picture.

Music works, and so do all the screens. Just when playing a video, no picture.

I assumed the converting works, the videos work well on my MacBook, my iPhone 3Gs, my iPod Touch (1&2 gen) and my iPad.

Any ideas? Is my AppleTV too old now?

Yeah the movie trailers work and clips from TV Shows. I guess the problem is the encoding. Strange it works on all the other devices and not the Apple TV.

Oh well I have far too many stuff encoded over the year and not redoing them. (240+ movies and counting). Guess I'll do without the AppleTV until I can afford a new generation one.

Yes, it is the encoding.

That :apple:TV is the weakest link relative to "all the other devices". Just about everything else has more robust playback horsepower. The new :apple:TV probably would do the trick (if you don't want to re-encode). I've seen the new one for $85 in the Apple refurb store:http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/specialdeals/ipod/apple_tv?mco=MTkyMjgwMzQ

I also have the first generation (like it better in some ways). But the newer version definitely wins on the playback versatility front.
