Hi all,

I have the 256gb 12.9 iPad Pro and loving it and have used 56gb of storage so far, however my concern is that Apps are getting bigger and in 2-3 years will the bigger storage be better? I normally change device every 24-36 months.

Also the 1tb has 6gb ram, but my understanding is that is to support the 1tb storage size? Is this true.

Cheers
Jonny

I suspect the 1TB model is for a small number of people who will actually move part of their primary photo editing workflow to the iPad. With Photoshop coming, and the power of the hardware, the iPad is becoming an option for a real photo editing tool. The 6GB RAM is there specifically for those power users.

That, and it’s a bit of Apple just showing off...

From everything I’ve heard and read, the extra RAM in the 1TB models is to support the hard drive.

While it would be nice to have the extra RAM for things like Photoshop, I don’t believe it’ll be needed.

Adobe isn’t producing an iPad version of Photoshop to run on only 4 models of the iPP, leaving the majority of user space in the dust. That’s not going to happen.

I’ve said this before in different threads, up until Wednesday, Adobe has been previewing Photoshop on second gen iPP’s, which have 4G of RAM, and it’s been just fine.

This should be the same across the board for all app developers. They aren’t going to make apps that run ONLY on the 1TB models.

Think about it like this:

There’s 39 versions of the iPP, gen 1-3.

Only 4 of those 39 have 6G of RAM.

I don’t have facts to back this claim up, but there’s got to be less of the 1TB models made. Considering the cost, the majority of users aren’t going to spend nearly $2000 on an iPP.

Well said! Apple and Adobe would be excluding a huge portion of their Pro user base by only allowing users with 6gb to run PS. That being said, I use the iPad Pro for illustration work and I could always use the extra RAM. However, I’m not sure it’s worth it to spend the extra cash at this point in time to take my 256 to a 1TB (just for the RAM - I really do not need that much storage). I would rather save it and then sell and upgrade (using the money I didn’t spend now) when the ram is updated across all iPP models in the future.

It's not that Photoshop will only run on models with 6GB. There is a huge variation in the level of need of Photoshop users. 98% of the user base will be fairly normal, light usage. A small percentage of people will want to work on exceptionally complex projects, and for those, the extra ram will help.

I am aware of no technical reason why increasing storage size necessitates increasing RAM.

I use my iPP for illustration work, too.

Adobe knows what they’re doing. They’ve gotta compete with Procreate. They know “real” Photoshop has got to work perfectly (for the majority of users) right out of the gate.

The file they demoed at the keynote is definitely the exception and not the rule (150 layers?! 9 feet x 9 feet?! 3G file size!) - I’m sure it was on a 1TB model, but again, who’s doing that kind of work on an iPad?

My wife saw a Photoshop on iPad demo this week in person. They were using a second gen iPP, and she said it was super fast!

That was speculation early on, but has since been dismissed.

Well, my point remains that no developer is going to make apps that run on 4 models and leave the other 35 in the dust.

I can’t say that’s true for FUTURE iPP’s, but for now, I think we’re all safe.

I was kinda surprised when Apple started the new base iPad pros with 64 gigs. I thought at these prices, it’d be 256 or at least 128. I think 64 gigs is the new 16 gigs. But people are getting by with 64. So I am not saying it can’t be done. But I think for Pro users, 256 is generally the starting point.

I was equally surprised that a 1 TB model was offered. Pleasantly so, but then I saw the price and was like...Whoa! Lol.

I was definitely going to get the 512 model before these were announced, thinking that would be the top size offered. Now I am on the fence. Especially after finding out about the 6 vs 4 gigs of ram difference. Like a lot of artists who plan do do heavy content creation work on it, I want to future proof my purchase as much as possible.

So this is where I am. Finally decided on the 11” vs the 12.9”...now I am just trying to decide on the 1TB vs the 512. I can see arguments for both. Cheaper and more than enough storage with the 512 or double the storage and more ram for extending it’s life at a significant cost. Hmm.

I personal don’t believe Apple made the 1TB,6GB RAM Model for only Adobe Photoshop. Whatever Apple has planned for the future whether that be mouse support, X-Code, Final Cut Pro X. This is deja Vu for the original iPad Pro. It offered nothing that any iPad before it. Then iOS 10 hit and made iPad Pro “Pro”.

Interesting. So do you think Apple will introduce features only available on the 1TB before the next iPP hardware update when (likely) all models are bumped to 6GB? I’m just not sure that the lower 4GB ram is really a concern, even for content creators, in the short term (18 -24 months)...
