1U Mini Racks

I havent used either, but I like the first one better. I would buy the first one.
 
But the 1st one is twice as expensive.
They both look rather expensive to me for just a piece of sheetmetal and some screws.

Having designed server racks before (and had them built), I can tell you that what you see is indeed just metal and screws, but the detail work and the fact that it's done for you is what drives up the price.

If you already have a rack setup you should stick with it for sure. I woud recommend a plain empty shelf and to rest your mini on that, but there is no security for the mini that way, nor is there any assurance that it won't fall off.

I still like the first one best! I would however like to see temperature results for this rack on a brand new mini with nothing extra installed. Idle and Load would be great to see how well the vents work.

The entire project is going to be crazy cheap by rack mount server standards. I'm going to get 2 quad minis, 2 8GB ram kits, and the rack for under $2300. Not cheap for home use, but a great price as far as rackmount stuff.

Even better when you factor in rack space and heat.

Are you only using Apple products?

Considered getting normal servers?
 
I have the Sonnet Macrackmini and have a 2011 Mac Mini Server inside the right bay.

I upgraded my mini to 8GB of RAM aftermarket and did the 750GB Apple store HDD upgrade.

I am a little worried about the heat when it sits inside the rack, it has gotten quite hot inside it so far, alot hotter than it was sitting outside the rack enclosure, but the only time it worried me was when I was trying to get an EFI upgrade and it kept stalling and freezing on me and then would give me a RAM dead beep error which would go away after a little while to cool down.

I am still investigating but hopefully it isn't the rack enclosure not allowing adequate ventilation. Otherwise it fits extremely well, I use the MMS for audio recording and playback in my mobile recording rig for gigs and it does the job very nicely.

I'm considering doing much the same but with 3-5 Mac mini servers and one base model (base model to be hooked to a Pegasus r6 to be a file server). Amount of servers is based on budget. The whole thing will end up being a video rendering farm. Cooling is my main concern so it might all go into an open rack as opposed to an enclosure. Hard drives will be set up in RAID 1 since they will mainly be used for OS only. 20 i7 cores with 40 gb of RAM should tear stuff up. The gigabit Ethernet might not be able handle the data flow though!

That's a hardcore investment, a lot of money.

2 Mac Pro's? dual gigabit or quad, is an option, but that's more of an investment.

I think heat is definitely a large concern when using the racks. real shame, the design is lovely and functionality of it too.
