Quick question - I have pwned my 1st gen iphone- primarily to unlock.

I understand that if I upgrade to 2.0.1 my phone will no longer be jailbroken. However, will the baseband remain unlocked?

Thanks!

Don't do it. It depends on your iPone, but I am pretty sure 2.0.1 carries a new bootloader with it. Safe to stick with what works for now

It is safe to update with the 1st gen 2G phones. No issues there, here is the summary from the team:

If you own a first generation (2G iPhone), no matter what you do now, you don’t have to worry, the next PwnageTool will get you where you want even if it you prematurely updated. 2G is completely pwned at every conceivable level and you’ll always be OK.

But if you own a 3G iPhone and are looking for unlock in the near future, don’t use Apple’s update yet!

If your 3G iPhone is on a regular contract and you always plan to be with the carrier then you can update but you will lose the jailbreak and access to third party (non AppStore) applications.

If your 3G iPhone is not on a regular contract and you plan to use it on an alternative network to the carrier that supplied it then do not update unless you do it with the impending PwnageTool update.

PwnageTool v2.0.1 does not work with version 2.0.1 of the iPhone or iPod update from Apple.

We will release an update to PwnageTool when the testing has been completed and all applied changes have been checked for safety.

This is just saying that the next pwnage tool will unlock it again, but it isn't clear whether the upgrade (non-custom 2.0.1 ISPW) will break the unlock or not. I think it will break it. The next pwnage tool (any day now) should be able to unlock it with no problems though

Notice "next pwnage tool", not current pwnage tool

No, the 2G phones are now completely controllable. You cannot lose the unlock by updating as they have stated. Only 3G Phones would be at risk because the baseband hasn't fully been controlled.

One of the team sums it up well on their blog after being questioned about the update:

2g owners are not in any danger of permanently losing either jailbreak or unlock, no matter what they update to. The baseband for 2g is fully controllable. The s5l for both 2g and 3g are fully controllable. It's just the 3g baseband that's still being poked and prodded.

Okay, to make this simple:

I'm running a 2G iPhone, unlocked on T-Mobile, on 2.0.1, with the TZones EDGE hack working. No brickage here, I just had to restore, as I got a "2005" error. My iPhone went instantly into restore mode.

You should be fine to upgrade to 2.0.1, as long as you don't want any Cydia apps. (Except the Tzones hack. Be sure to install that before you upgrade.) Hope this makes it easier. (So many contradictory posts on here...)

I had a pwned 1st gen, was slow and annoying, upgraded to 2.01. It didn't lock or de-activate. But as stated Cydia is gone. The upside of this is that the phone feels much more responsive, and I no longer have delays when opening SMS and a few other things !

So if you are not bothered about Cydia apps it seems like a good way to go !

what is it with you and unlocking (hacking)? if you already bought legitimately the 2.0 software upgrade, you can download the 2.0.1 firmware for free. that's fact, do your own research.
Unlocking and jailbreaking your phone has many benefit, do your own research on what they are. Hacking typically implies someone with skills...using winpwn requires nothing.

help

Ok question. I bought a first gen iphone updated to 2.0 that was locked to at&t. I unlocked it for tmobile using pwnage 2.0.1. everything is working except edge.I have the $5.99 wap plan and i have tried the edge hack, i have tried re-pwning it, nothing seems to be working. i was reading earlier posts on this thread and it seems that most people had a 1.1.x firmware that had the working edge hack then upgraded to 2.0 and edge still works. my question is do i need to downgrade my firmware and use the edge hack then upgrade again for it to work? i dont care about having cydia, i just want my edge to work

My iPhone should be comming in a few days, so will it come with version 2.0.1? That will suk because I wanted to jailbreak it. Is there a way to downgrade to 2.0

It will likely have 2.0, but it doesn't really matter because a new version of the PwnageTool should be released tomorrow (August 8)

Not sure why you would upgrade...but base on the information given is that it should work just fine.

Restore it brand new and wait for the new pwnage tool.

can anyone add some light into this? Your iPhone has entered recovery after pwning!

ZiPhone has the option to re-enter "normal mode". It's one of the options on the top menu. That should kick you out of recovery mode
