After multiple tests, it looks like the 2.0 firmware on my gen 1 iPhone won't allow more than 16 downloaded apps. No matter what the order, as soon as the 17th app is attempted, it will crash back to the main screen (eventually rebooting the iPhone).

Took a while to figure out if it was a specific trouble app or an iPhone issue...

Other than that limit, it seems stable. Hope 2.0.1 comes out quickly.

Can open all "standard" apps - the 16 standby spp limit only applies to downloaded apps.

i've got 19 installed over here... must just be your phone? who knows..

The limit isn't installed, but actively in "standby." Start launching your downloaded apps one at a time. If you can launch #17 I'd be surprised. Make sure you don't count the standard iPhone apps. Reproduced it on a 2nd iPhone.

Just to make sure the description is clear:
1) Launch a newly downloaded app and wait until it finishes loading.
2) Press the iPhone Home button
3) Launch a different newly downloaded app and wait until it finishes loading.
4) rinse, wash, repeat....

Silly question - but have you run out of memory???

Not silly at all, but the answer is no.

According to iTunes I'm currently using less than 800Mb of my 8Gb storage (apps and contacts/calendar only sync'd).

The apps I'm using to test are all small (i.e. not ePocrates...), but I have used ePocrates and Texas Hold'em in the count before. No matter what I can only launch 16 non-standard apps regardless of combination. Trying to launch #17 crashes back to the home screen as it loads and eventually causes the iPhone to reboot after a few more screen taps.

If I remember right, Apple said they were putting apps into a "standby" mode rather than quitting them or letting them run in the background. My wild-a..-hunch is there's a bug that won't allow more than 16 "non-standard/non-firmware" apps to be in standby and rather than exit gracefully, they implode.
