2.0 or 2.16 GHz?

Hey guys,

I read about how you guys think the MBP is better than MB.

But I'm anything but a "pro" with the computer, and can't afford the MBP so I'm getting a MB. I'll use it for basic desktop publishing, email, internet, and digital photography editing (basic editing)

Do you think I'll notice the difference between the 2.0 and the 2.16 processors ? Or do you think increasing to 2MB ram would be more beneficial for photo applications ?

You will reap more benefits from additional RAM. The processor differential is negligible at best.

If you are planning on buying a brand new MB from Apple the only way to get the Superdrive is to get a 2.16ghz. With the 2.0 you only get a Combo drive...

I also say that adding more RAM is a big help...sped up my booting process comsiderably!

While it is difficult to state for certain that a 2.0 GHz with 2MB will run close to a 2.16 GHz with the apps that you listed, I can state that more memory is always a good thing. If you can get away with just doing the memory upgrade and still run the programs that you need then I would suggest holding off on a new purchase. Once you see your updated apps running poorly then I would start to look for a hardware update.

Go with the 2.00Ghz model with 2GB RAM - it will be far more beneficial and noticeable than the 2.16Ghz model with 1GB of RAM.

Yep a MacBook should be good enough to handle the stuff you'll be doing.. Try and allocate some $$$ to maximize the RAM and definitely go for the 2.16GHz for the super drive.

Get the 2.16 with SuperDrive, then head off to newegg.com, etc and buy a 2GB Dual-Channel kit (2x1GB) like Corsair, mushkin, etc. They only run about $80-$90 vs. the $$$ Apple wants for it. That is what I am doing.

If you arent a workshop guy, i'd consider getting a $1299 2.16GHz Core 2 Duo with the 120GB hard drive. If you think your going to need more power, go for 2GB RAM.(upgrade it yourself, it takes about 10 minutes max)

Apple's RAM prices suck. I could upgrade a MacBook's standard 1GB RAM to 2GB for $110 if i wanted to, and i could keep the two 1GB sticks. Apple prices, they charge $175, and you dont get to keep the sticks, which are worth around 40-50 for a pair of the 512 sticks.

You'll be just fine with the 2.0GHz model although the 2.16GHz processor is a very slightly faster, it's essentially negligible (e.g. check http://creativemac.digitalmedianet.com/articles/viewarticle.jsp?id=43717 - the test of the 2.0GHz MB versus the 2.16GHz MBP running FCP is a good example as it's a CPU intensive app).

If you're going to be editing photos a lot definitely install 2GB RAM yourself but think about adding a bit more - if not now then in the future.
