I bought myself a 2G iPhone earlier this week.
Even thought I have an O2 contract, it's not an official iPhone contract.
I also have an iTunes account.
I've applied the 2.0 update but I'm not sure how to activate the phone as it as it's not accepting my phone number.

Is there a way for me to activate it?

Use a friends iPhone to activate it.

Use a friend's iPhone to activate my iPhone?

I don't understand. Can you please explain?

I think he means use a friend who has an official iPhone / plan's SIM / number to activate your phone then pop your SIM in.

I think I can do that.
Would it be a problem if my friend also tried to activate his 2.0 iPhone after doing this, as he also wants to update.

According to the new o2 rules you can use the origional iPhone with any o2 SIM now.

Look here. http://service.o2.co.uk/IQ/SRVS/CGI...00000001930125629,K=7964,Sxi=1,Case=obj(18198)

It's quite odd.
When the iPhone tries to access the iTunes store, I get the error: We could not complete your iTunes store request. Your network connection may have timed out.

When I try to access the store (inedpendent of the phone) it works fine.
Perhaps their servers are struggling.

That's exactly what's happening -- can't get through to the activation server following an update.

I've not done anything different to what I was doing in the morning but it's now activated successfully.
I've also successfully restored from a backup.
I guess the servers wern't quite set up right in the morning.

a27 do you mean that you took your normal o2 sim card for your non iphone plan and stuck it in the 1st gen iphone and itunes activated it without issue?

I am in a similar situation. I have a 1st gen iphone, att, and an att simcard(new att not the old att) and I am trying to figure out if I can just update the phone to 2.0 and have itunes activate it with my normal att simcard. Before I used independence to activate my phone and I'm still back on 1.0.2 or something like that

Yes sir!
When I tried it in the morning, it asked for my phone number and the activation didn't work.
When I tried it in the evening, it asked for my iTunes account and did work.

thanks for the reply but I read some other posts that it looks like its something to do with o2 so I'm not sure if it'll work with my phone.
