I want to change the root and mobile passwords on a jailbroken iPhone running 2.2; however I've heard mumblings that doing this causes things to break under 2.2. Also how would this effect iTunes syncing? Any advice?

Just dont bother with it. As long as nobody can see you IP Address your safe from some else messing with it. Just keep the default username and password as root and alpine
Anyone with enough knowledge to want to mess with an iphone is going to know that they are all addressed 10.0.2.2 with root and alpine.
If you don't want to change the password at least download "Toggle SSH". That will turn SSH off so they can't access it even if they know 10.0.2.2 with root and alpine
