please bare with me. I am trying to update my jailbroken 3g 2.2 to the 3.01 firmware and jailbreak. I have been out of the loop for a while cuz i was satisfied with mine untill now. So many different versions are out and im a lil lost on how i should go about this without doing something that will keep me from being able to jailbreak. I have already gotten redsn0w and i have my 2.2 ispw firmware, and the 3.0.1 ispw. can some one list in order what steps i should take?

Ok. I guess I just want to know how can i upgrade to 3.0.1? eventhough 3.1 is the latest. seems like everyone is saying stay away from 3.1

Reposting here because i saw this after i already replied in the other thread and this is more what i am looking to do as well. Discontinuing my help in the other thread.

Copied-
excuse me if im thread jacking, i dont mean to. I was doing some research and this is a related topic so i thought id get the same help here. Actually this thread answered, among others, whether i wanted to go to 3.1 or 3.0.1 and whether it was possible.

Ive been waiting since 2.2 for mms as my phone was working fine and i didnt 'need' any of the previous updates. I have a 3G jailbroken phone thats customised using cydia. I did previous research and jailbroke my phone myself twice following the simple steps that have been listed so i can follow instructions but im not software expert. I just want to be sure what ive learned so far is correct now that mms is available and i want to update. Im fine skipping 3.1 and though i dont need unlock id like to keep it open as an option so im gonna be going with redsnow jailbreak 3.0.1.

I want to keep my cydia apps and and if i remember correctly that i need a program (i forget the name, appbackup?) that will restore my cydia apps after i rejailbreak my phone. So am i correct that my steps are to back up my cydia apps and then follow the instructions from the link u provided above pointing to firmware 3.0.1 with redsnow and then use the backup program as well as checking my carrier update file?

Current version 2.2 jailbroken 3G
Step1-back up cydia apps
Step2-download redsnow and the 3.0.1 ipsw restore file
Step3-proceed with instructions on jailbreaking
Step4-check carrier file update

And i was told that the back up app i was thinking of aptbackup was for itunes store apps and no cydia apps so i guess i have to manually reinstall the apps i had from cydia.

No, no! That's not what I said. AptBackUp is the app you want. (You had originally mentioned AppBackUp, which is a different app -- the difference in name is one letter, hence the confusion.)

ohhh ok so i just had the wrong name in there. :) ok so that helps a lot. I forgot another thing. I have the custom payphone dialer and had to add images in the phones system itself. Cant remember the specifics right now cuz it was mannny months ago but i guess it cant backup things i changed that arent apps huh?

Oh and my final step would be to add ultrasnow for unlocking and use in the future?

Only way to back those up would be if you can remember where they are in the iphone file system. Which is why when I make changes like that, I write notes to myself about which files I changed, and keep the notes in a folder called "iPhone backups," along with copies of the files that were changed.

Can't be sure, since I've never tried to unlock an iPhone myself, but I thought you only needed to download ultrasnow if you want to unlock *now*. But as unlocking an iPhone is a different topic from jailbreaking, you might want to start a new thread, or ask in a thread about unlocking.

been trying for a couple hours and at first i kept getting an error 10 in itunes while trying to restore using 3.0.1 provided by iclarified. After that i read that u could ignore error messages but i wasnt sure if it was the same error or if the restore had even completed. After clicking ok on the error it says the phone is in recovery mode and has to be restored. I decided to try and run redsnow and it completes but after the phone is rebooting itself it shows the usb->itunes connection and itunes just says the phone is in recovery mode.

Right now im trying to get the phone jailbroken using 3.0 entirely and not using 3.0.1. My itunes version is 8.1. I also read that u can kick it out of recovery mode in a process before running redsnow by using quickpwn but no version of quickpwn seems to run on my computer. Windows pops up with an error everytime.

I just finished attempting a restore with 3.0 file from iclarified and it says it cannot restore error10.

ok i updated itunes to itunes 9 and the restore to 3.0.1 worked fine along with redsnow jailbreak after. Now on my other phone im wondering if i can update 3.0.1 (trying to find it instead of the restore file). Im worried that i might lose something when i restore as i dont sync everything on my phone. If i were able to just update then jb i should keep anything not related to jb right?

update: decided to go ahead with updating to 3.0.1 instead of a restore on my 2nd phone and was successful including a jb. All previous data is there and in place with the exclusion of jailbroken apps. Make it mine carrier change was still there so i had to install again to remove the logo so i can do the carrier update. So far ive achieved success.
