2.4ghz with 4gb ram VS. 2.8ghz with 2gb ram

I've set my budget and it allows for two setups on the 24" iMac

2.4ghz model with 4gb of ram (aftermarket of course)

or

2.8ghz model with 2gb of ram

I'm looking for feeback on which to pick, considering I'm a pretty basic user who will generally be doing excel/access work and maybe some light gaming.

Also, dual channel - does it mean anything?

why don´t you take a 24" 2.4ghz imac from the store with just 1gb ram and update it for a 2.8ghz. that way you´ll get one with 1gb but 2.8ghz...

then you could rush out to buy 2gb ram elsewhere for about 100$ straight away, or you´d wait...

i ordered 2.8ghz, 1gb, (+2gb elsewhere), 750gb hd. skip the bluetooth keyboard. it will just mean extended waiting times.. and those - i can assure you - are no fun..

Price of 2.8Ghz Mac is awfully close to price of MacPro especially if you add upgraded ram or HDD.

MacPro with Dell 24" Screen = 2500 + 570 = 3070

Imac 2.8Ghz upgrade , 750 GB Drive, 4G Ram from 3rd party = 2300 + 300 = 2600

Granted you are not getting the ram nore the HDD in the Pro model, but you're are getting a machine thats very upgradable for the future and much faster.

I got the 2.4Ghz and I wonder if I made the right choice, but if you really need the speed and durability then the Imac just is not that kind of machine the pro is, but as usual with Mac you have to wait,wait,wait.....maybe November?

For that usage a 2GHz 2GB machine would be more than enough.

Beware: Extra RAM fitted to the iMac 24" 2.8GHz doesn't CLICK into place - it just fits smoothly - disconcerting at first - till you've re-inserted it a few dozen times! Rest assured; if it slides in smoothly it's OK.

I vote extra ram. Speedier CPU isn't as important if you're a basic user.

The RAM can be upgraded later while the CPU cant. Take that into consideration. The GLORY of woning a Intel Extreme CPU.
