2.53 Ghz 2009 Mac mini on eBay - is this real?

Hehehe, or he just type-o'ed and really meant the 2.26GHz Intel Core 2 Duo. :D

It does say below:

"We upgraded the CPU to Core 2 Duo 2.53GHz and the Hard Drive to the 320GB 7200 RPM to keep up with the speed of this screamer.
You can't order one from Apple this way but here at AppleCoreOnline you can.
Apple's Mini's only have a 2.2 GHz CPU and 5400 RPM Hard Drive, we include a 2.53 GHz CPU and a 320GB 7200 RPM." though.

Right. I sent them an email asking for photo proof [and instructions how to replace... hey couldnt hurt to ask them right? :) ] Maybe they will get back with a photo though.
 
Can't be a typeo cause there's more description of it below, I could see if it was just the title but the actual description explains they installed a 2.5GHz cpu.

Maybe they overclocked it somehow?
 
I'm not sure what the deal is with that. When looking at the charts of Intel's chips, I don't see a 2.53GHZ with 6MB L2 cache that is even the same socket. I see a 2.53GHZ with 3MB cache.

Everything is possible. PayPal can still save you if you make the wrong decision. My friends dad buys lots of things from eBay (most of 'em are cars and car parts) and never had a problem.

It's quite pricey, +1500$ for Mini, huh?
 
Let me get this straight: you're wondering if you should drop a 2.26GHz order so that you can pay $500 (essentially 50%) more for a speed boost that at best is barely going to top 10%, even theoretically, and a slightly faster HD? Without even knowing how the new thermal profile will work in such a small enclosure? And knowing it'll obviously void AppleCare and replace it with a shorter (1 year) and even-more-expensive-than-AppleCare warranty (who even know that was possible)?

Seriously? Assuming it's actually real?

No, you are not getting it. I would not order this, I would cancel if confirmed that it is possible to replace the CPU of the mini. If they managed to do it, then it looks like it is possible.

I would order a base 2.0 Ghz mini instead and then replace the CPU myself. A Quad core CPU in a mini is looking pretty sweet.
 
if true, then maybe some motherboards are coming socketed and others are not. Has anyone with a 2.26 BTO gotten their yet? Maybe they have a version that is upgradable for BTO and another soldered version for the retail minis?

More likely they figured a way to hack EFI or Leopard to report 2.53 or managed to somehow overclock the CPU.

I would stay away from this one.

They can resolder a new CPU with hot air, but it's highly risky and I have doubts; besides 2.26GHz is fast enough; I'm sure for $1500 you can find a decenty used Quad Mac Pro.

I so wish that you are right about this. But it doesnt really make much sense since there are only one higher CPU config than the 2.0 base model. Maybe if they are already planning to offer the 2.53 CPU themselves as an option in 2-3 months or so, and plan to use the same main board.

Very possibly so. But again, this thread is not about getting the $1500 mini off eBay, it is about whether it is possible to replace the CPU in the new mini.

It's soldered. It's possible, but very difficult.

Plus somehow you'd have to buy the FCBGA processor which they don't sell in stores.
 
My guess is that this is either a 2008 Mac Mini that's had its CPU upgraded or the seller thinks that the CPUs are upgradeable and will go out and buy a Mac Mini and a CPU as soon as someone's purchased this. Poor guys!

The CPUs in the nVidia based Mac Mini are soldered on. IFixIt confirmed this. :( See here - its confirmed in the comments section. :(

I see... So there is no way that a Socket P CPU from retail could be fitted to this board?
