2.66GHz Quad (Woodcrest) & 23" Cinema Display For $1200?

Someone local is selling a Woodcrest (2.66GHz Quad) and a 23" Cinema Display for $1200. Is this a good deal? I haven't checked it out yet but the guy says that there is nothing wrong with either pieces of hardware. What do you guys think? Is the Woodcrest too old? Thanks for any advice.

That depends. What do you want to use it for? What are the specs on the Mac Pro, and what else is it with? How much ram ? How many hard drives? Does it have an upgraded video card?

It sounds like an okay price, but not a great deal. Expect the value to go lower if a new model is released within a month or two.

It has 2GB RAM, GeForce 7300 GT, 2 hard drives (250GB & 160GB).

With only 2GB RAM that's far from a 'great' deal. RAM for that model MP is pretty pricy, so keep that in mind as you'll definitely want more than 2GB.

In my opinion, people highly over value the old Cinema Displays. That's probably inflating the price you're looking at.

That video card is mediocre and you'll want to upgrade it for sure. The hard drives are irrelevant (they're cheap, and I personally always put new drives in a used machine as I don't like used drives, especially 5 year old used drives).

I've seen that 1,1 model in 2.0, 2.66 and 3.0 GHz speeds for sale locally over the past few months for anywhere from $450 to $1000. I wouldn't pay more than $1K for it in any configuration. The one for $450 had the least options, like 2.0GHz, 1GB RAM etc. The one for $1000 was a 3.0GHz, 10GB RAM, and better video card.

The display is worth about $350 and that machine is worth about $650 - $750), so maybe if you can talk him down about $100 - $200 it would be a good deal.

I tried talking him down to no avail and after reading nanofrog's post in another topic, I've decided not to go with this no matter the price (unless it is at a garage sale for $10 ). Thanks for all the help.

Same topic, different thread (these come up rather often).

For long term use, it's the right decision IMO (~$1k mark is a bit much for say a years worth of use, unless the limitations aren't an issue = rare from what I tend to gather from those considering 2006/7 models <due to the much more attractive price>).
