2.8 Ghz iMacs at Amazon?

I e-mailed Amazon today to see if they had any plans to carry the 2.8 Ghz model and, for those interested, here was their reply:

At this time, Apple 2.8Ghz 24" model is unavailable to us and we're
not sure if we'll be able to obtain it in the future.

However, you are welcome to purchase the other model "Apple 24"iMac
model" at anytime you want.

Also I would like to suggest checking our web site from time to
time to see if this item is available from us or from another
seller. If anyone is selling it, you'll see a "More Buying Choices"
box on the product detail page; if it's not available from any
sellers, you might see an "Order it used" or "Alert me" link. "Order
it used" allows you to place a pre-order for the item in case
another seller puts a copy up for sale later. "Alert me" allows you
to sign up so we can e-mail you when Amazon has copies available for
purchase.

I'm sorry not to have better news, but I hope this information has
been helpful."

I'm still on the fence as to which one to go with myself...I think the 2.4 Ghz would be plenty sufficient with the RAM maxed out especially and I'd rather order from Amazon and get the points (triple if you use your Amazon credit card), save tax $, and hopefully get a rebate, not to mention that I 've ordered many times from them and their customer service is excellent...but...benchmarks are starting to come in on the 2.8 and it looks good so far-not to mention that I will be running Aperture. What to do....?!

Get the 2.8. I don't think that the 2.16 to 2.33 was particularly worth it on the last gen, but the 2.4 to 2.8 seems to be worth it to me, that's what I ordered. I also selected the $1,799 2.4 and changed the CPU to 2.8 and the drive back to 500 which made it $150 less than the $2,299 stock 2.8 and gave it 1GB RAM, 1 stick. That way I could add more RAM. A single 2GB stick is less than the $150 difference so you could get 3GB total for less than the price of the stock 2.8.

I recieved the 24" 2.4 yesterday and installed 4 GB ram. Damn this thing is quick! Itunes encoding, burning and everything. I havent gotten into any photoshop yet but as far as I can tell you will be very satisfied with the 2.4 At the last second I opted out of the 2.8 after talking to a couple people. I am sure it is faster, but I dont know how you could tel a $250 difference between the two. Save yourself some cash and get 4gb ram from macsales for $230 and prepare to be happy. Its fast enough. Hope this helps.
