2 computers and one itunes library?

Is it possible to have a desktop (windows vista) and laptop (windows live) running itunes off of an external network hard drive and use one itunes library?

The idea would be so that I could modify the itunes library from the laptop but then use apple tv running off of the desktop itunes with external network hard drive library?

Any help would be helpful.

I will check this out.

I wasn't exactly thinking of this but I will try. I was thinking of having itunes opening the same library not having two.

You can't have two computers opening the same iTunes library at the same time.

I use a similar approach. All of my media is on a NAS. Each computer can add to library files but I also make sure my preferences are set to not move the files just add to library. The very same set of files can also now be handled by other media players as well. The only real complexity is when I download from iTunes and end up moving the file to the NAS and deleting the file from iTunes so I can "add to library" from the NAS. It really isn't complicated just simple rules to keep things in order. Btw, ALL my iTunes on the NAS sit in a directory called "iTunes Purchases" and then sub directories as needed.

The only catch to the above method is to make sure the computer is seeing the NAS before using iTunes. In my case, I set that any log in will initiate recognition of the NAS.

Yes, you can open the library, so if you only play music and don't do anything else, it works. If you want to edit anything, the functionality runs into limitations. From the link you posted:
  • You can only make updates to one music library at a time — you cannot have iTunes open on both computers and make changes. Make changes on one, then open the other one.
  • You need to close iTunes on the computer you made changes on, and reopen it on all other computers to see changes
