Never had a crash until yesterday on 10.11.4
Safari open and iTunes syncing with an iPhone 6s Plus.
System was locked up and the Force Touch trackpad had no response.

Not being rude, just trying to understand the impacts. Did you both upgrade from 10.11.3 or some other version?

I know when I upgraded to 10.11.3 from 10.10.4 I had a number of crashes on the first day or so but then everything went stable and it hasn't done it since.

Had issue with the early 10.11.4 betas, but the later versions and the shipping version have been running smooth as silk thus far.

Hmm I had a similar issue. Safari got sluggish so I went to close it and the system froze, I had mouse control but nothing else. This lasted about 3 minutes, it registered all my inputs because it did that faster forward thing computers do when it displays everything you did in a seconds time.

I had Safari, Messages, Email and iTunes open.

Same thing here. Shortly after updating the system froze and I had to do a hard restart. Safari is utilizing a high CPU % and the fan is running continuously. Everything is sluggish. Well done Apple.

I'm in the process of updating my 2011 Mac Mini. Hopefully it doesn't crash like my 2014 Mini did. 11 minutes left on downloading the update. I've got my fingers crossed.

Update: It went flawlessly. So far everything works as it should.

Since upgrading to 10.11.4 my Mac Mini Server has completely frozen 3 times except for the mouse being able to move. No clicks are registered. The only way out is to reboot or log out and back in. Safari has been open every time it's frozen, nothing else seems obvious. It's quite annoying and unpredictable. Any ideas?

hi
this is exactly what happened in my case as well.
i updated as per the update in App Store, directly from the previous decimal point version.
as i have said, i don't even remember when i had crashes before. a good many years.
therefore you should understand from that that i don't have a lot of stupid junk apps on my system.
then, two crashes.

It's definitely troubling to have such crashes if you're up-to-date on all third party apps. Some will probably be issuing updates in the next couple of weeks.

Safari extensions are a little more worrying as it's hard to know if they've ben updated without checking the developer's website for the revision history. I don't have but three but here's what I found about them:
  • "HD Player" (for Youtube) hasn't been updated since December.
  • "AdBlock Plus" was updated 15 days ago but was NOT auto-updated on my computer so I just did it manually.
  • "Make it Short" (URL shortener) seems like abandonware so I've uninstalled it.
So...yeah...if I were having issues I'd be looking at EVERY third-party thing on my Mac.

Can any of you paste any recent logs from the "Console" application. Both System and User logs. There may be a particular application causing these crashes.

i think the issue involves apple's poor coding of "force click" on MacBooks that don't support "force click" trackpads. such as all macbook airs, and mostly all other macbooks.

I've had 3 freezes since the update. Each time Safari has been open and I've had to force shut down using the power button...very annoying.

I've had 3 freezes since the update and one crash that warranted a restart and a crash report being sent in. That one was failure to wake from sleep as the laptop sat next to me with the lid closed, it played the restart noise and poof. I have not figured out what is making it lockup so far, force touch has worked while the computer (latest 13" mbp) was frozen.

I can force click on my laptop and still have had a crash and a few freezes so don't think that's the problem, as least for me. I was able to open activity monitor and Safari, kernel_task, and WindowServer took turns using 80+ percent cpu while the computer was unresponsive.

Yep, Console told me Window server was unresponsive each time I checked after booting back up.

I have had this issue ever since the first public beta of 10.11.4. System would freeze and require a hard restart. With each beta update i hoped that the issue would be resolved. I even wrote comments here at MR asking if anyone else was having similar issues but didn't get any responses. So i assumed maybe it is a hardware issue with my machine. After 5 or so betas, i gave up and formatted the system. Reinstalled 10.11.3 and it has been 100% stable. No freezes at all.

I am disappointed that Apple still hasn't fixed this issue in the public release. All i know is i am staying with 10.11.3 for as long as i can.

Mar 27 11:59:17 hostname watchdogd[313]: [watchdog_daemon] @(_wd_daemon_service_thread) - service (com.apple.WindowServer) reported as unresponsive

So, watchdog is noticing that WindowServer is unresponsive, WebKit is complaining about a failed/failing video playback. Looks like someone on the developer front forgot to implement a timeout for failing vid playbacks, and this blocks the graphical user interface.

Workaround: avoiding the Safari browser (webkit!) for the time being seems a viable workaround. One could try (haven't tested, though) to use ssh to log on from a remote machine and then terminate either Safari or WindowServer to "unblock" the screen.
