2 days old iMac - black screen crossed out circle

2017 27" 5k model

• 4.2GHz quad-core 7th-generation Intel Core i7, Turbo Boost up to 4.5GHz
• 8GB 2400MHz DDR4
• 2TB Fusion Drive
• Radeon Pro 580 with 8GB video memory

For 2 days it seemed to work fine, although maybe there were a few signs that it wasn't working properly, such as app crashing and struggling to load icons in folder. I don't know, maybe I had unrealistic expectations about it working flawlessly since I'm coming from a 2010 iMac on its last legs.

Anyway, I wake up today to the black screen with crossed out circle. Can't boot into Safe Mode, and when I go into Recovery Mode, this is what Disk Utility says after doing First Aid on SSD (it's a Fusion Drive but only SSD is listed under Internal..):

First Aid found corruption that needs to be repaired. To repair the startup volume, run First Aid from Recovery.

Okay, but am already in Recovery Mode..

Incomplete or inconsistent CoreStorage Physical Volume set
Storage system check exit code is 1.
Problems were found with the partition map which might prevent booting.
Operation successful.


What's the right course of action here? It's two(!) days old so would hate to fix it only to see more problems in the future. Am I in my rights to have it replaced with a new one? Or is this no big deal and easily fixed?

The only course of action is to return it and exchange for a new one. You are in your return period so no reason to have it repaired. Just dump the lemon while you can.

You should be able to have it replaced with another new computer. You are within the 14 day return window so worst case would be to get a full refund and then purchase another new computer.

Assuming you purchased from a place that allows returns (Apple will within 14 days, no questions asked, but other reputable dealers will allow returns for a good reason, which you have.) There are lemons among every model (this was true in 2010 and is true for every manufacturer), so just replace yours and move on.

Yeah, just return it. Not worth dealing with.

With electronics if something is going to prematurely fail 99% of the time it does it very quickly. Although returning and repurchasing would be better IMO (peace of mind if nothing else), repairing it would be a permanent fix. Returning it also gives you the opportunity to reevaluate your original purchase (SSD, RAM, CPU options etc).
