I downloaded Fanny and I just paid for Monit on the app store but both apps show my cpu and gpu as zero degrees - fans seem to be working normally.

High Sierra 10.13.6
2 x 3.46 GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980

Hope someone has a tip!

The apps are broken. Obviously your processors are not running at 0.

MONIT website

  • Can I see CPU temperature and fan-speed?
Yes, if you download and install the Helper. An App Store App by itself is not allowed to read system sensors due to sandbox limitations.

thanks gents - I had the monit helper installed already, bit despite this it's still showing zero degrees for cpu and gnu - I'll have a go with iStat to see if that works correctly.

viewing component temperatures never accomplished anything. These computers (and their components) don't overheat in a way that requires a change in the way we do work

Agreed, but it is often helpful to be able to read temperatures before and after a hardware change, like putting in a different processor. I like to be sure that I haven't buggered up applying the heat sink compound .

IStat works fine - I changed the cooling paste on my CPU’s so I wanted to make sure I hadn’t made things worse (by the looks of it I reduced temps, but only by 5 degrees or so).

5°C is quite a bit already.

Also, if the temperature reach certain threshold, you may not see any temperature drop, but same temperature with lower fan speed. This is also a sign that the cooling performance is improved.

Ah good point, thanks 👍
