Is it possible with the setup described above for the humans to share:

- apps

while keeping separate

- contacts, calendars, music, mail etc??

They share a mac mini and an iPad (both with iCloud)
One has an iPhone 4 (running iOS5), the other an iPhone 3g

That's what my wife and I do. One Apple ID for iTunes/App Store purchases, and we each have our own iCloud ID for contacts, etc. Or you could use just one iCloud ID if you want all devices to have the same contacts, etc.

I was worried that having the iCloud ID different from the apple ID used to purchase apps would mean the apps not showing on iOS devices. So that won't happen?

I'm slowly getting the hang of this! Ta

Yeah. iCloud IDs are distinct. In OS5 there is actually a specific place in the settings that you define your iTunes Store ID, which controls apps, music, etc.

Tho sharing an apple id is against the terms and conditions of the account.... It's not made to be shared.

Apple's FairPlay policy lets you share your media with up-to 10 devices (iPhone/iPad/iPod touch, but only with 5 computers).

Why couldn't a husband and wife share an ID?

The FairPlay thing is for people that have multiple devices, like a home computer, a laptop, work computer, and iPad and an iPhone. It allows or that.

Apple's own T&Cs state that an apple ID is not to be shared and is for an individual.

But nice to see you're bending the rules to suit your needs....

Apple IDs are free so what's wrong with having separate ones? So you have to buy separate apps? That's a good thing, as devs deserve to e paid for their work. It's like sharing a copy with office on your other halves computer. It's not allowed under a standard licence.

I wonder if that's a UK thing? I just read through the US terms, and didn't find anything talking about that. Maybe I just missed it? The closest it comes to that is stating you shouldn't reveal your account information to anybody else. So technically, no sharing of passwords. But it does allow for the iTunes content to be installed on ANY five associated devices. The terms don't seem to care who owns or uses them. You, your spouse, kid, whoever.

No, the last time I looked, when this debate was going on in another thread about 2 months back, it got pointed out to me, on the US T&Cs as well as the UK one, it says an Apple ID is for an individual.

When I bought my husband an iPad I got our IDs all screwed up so I went to the Apple store to get help. The 'genius' is the one who actually suggested we put my ID on his iPad so we could share purchases. I didn't think we could but he set it up so as far as I'm concerned Apple's rep says it ok - so its ok.

clearly you are not married. They are all my devices, I just allow my wife to carry one.

Also, if you want to get technical about things, I have 4 phones on 1 plan, therefore I am technically the owner of all devices on that plan. Is that good enough for you? Pretty sure i could call Verizon today, cancel the number to the phone that she carries around and there is nothing she can do about it.

Give me a break. When my wife and I got our first iTunes account there was no way to share iTunes store music between accounts. So we shared one ID.

You're saying we should have bought every iTunes song TWICE and just kept 2 copies on our computer?

If that's what Apple wanted us to do then they shouldn't be surprised that people "bent" the rules. That's insane.

So as a result...we now share an Apple ID for iTunes.

like others have said use 1 id for purchases and each have 1 for contacts etc

also like others have said, apple assumes those devices are all used by the same person so in that case you would want to share contacts etc with all devices

what about when people split up does the person who doesnt "own" the apple ID have to forfeit all the music and apps back to their ex?

Well seeing the problem the OP posted about, it shows apple had designed the whole thing for 1 Apple ID per person, so obviously that's what they wanted.....

lol

give me back my copy of Angry Birds

all seriousness it is breaking the rules slightly to share ids with mutiple humans, i break copyright laws but i dont blame anyone ie(apple) for not making it more convienant to do

This is exactly my sentiment on the matter. I was just pointing out the rules just to keep people informed. They break the rules and get busted, at least they did so knowingly.

Tho I do feel it's unfair on the devs that lose out on being paid for their work when people do this.

I thought this was the point of Home Sharing? Can't you have two separate IDs, and use Home sharing to share apps?

Sharing IDs for the sake of sharing music and app purchases was made irrelevant with the advent of Home Sharing.

How do you handle app updates?

I used to use home sharing, but updates were a problem. I'd never remember to tell my family members that something needed updating - I probably did it while out at a store somewhere, promptly forgot about it. Home sharing is useless for apps since it doesn't push update notifications out to the other people using them.
