2 iPhones 2G and 3G for same number and sim card?

I am currently using my iPhone 3G. I still have my 2G iPhone. Today I felt like using my 2G. I placed the sim card from my 3G into my 2G and in iTunes I got asked to activate the phone and line through AT&T (choosing minutes, sms etc) I did not proceed as i did not want to mess up my AT&T account. Why is it that I can not switch between both phones? Is there a way around this. I mean that same phone # was on my 2G before getting the 3G. Please help! I would like to able to use both?!

You have to unlock the old 2G phone.

I have no clue. I know when I was running 1.1.4 on an old 2G phone, I used Ziphone. I'm not sure if there is anything yet for 2.0.2 on a 2G phone. Hopefully someone else will know more.
