I've been searching for the last hour now. My husband has an iPhone and I was just gifted one. :) I'd like to not activate my iPhone at this time till we sort out a plan.

I see a few methods to do this:

1. Bogus 999etc SN number, goplan, whatever.
2. The hack which seems to not allow Youtube right now.
3. Sign up for the plan, activate, then cancel in 3 days (I'm sketchy on the activation fee issue with this)....

And..... I seem to remember reading about some trick using 2 iPhones but I can't find it. Would anyone suggest which is the best way to use my phone data side via my Wifi only for now if one still plans to activate later? And, is there any way I can somehow trick this unactivated phone with the activated Sim card from the other to be able to use the non-phone features? TIA

How about you and your husband both activate your phones on normal plans then at some point in the future if you want to do something different you call up AT&T or go online and change your account to whatever plan you desire.

Otherwise it sounds like you'd rather be able to simply use the iPhone without having anything to do with AT&T. In that case you would be better off returning the gift, politely telling the kind gift giver that you do not wish to pay for the service contract on the gift and must therefore return it.

No, I plan to activate it but perhaps not in the next 2 weeks or so at best. My husband's phone is already activated. I just want to use the non-phone features in the 2nd one at this time but not sure the 'best' way to go about it and keep thinking I could somehow do this by tricking it into opening with his activated SIM?

Just go to this website and follow the directions to activate you iPhone. It is very simple, I have modded my iPhone in several different ways following their tutorials.

Matt...

Oh and for all you haters out there, this is not my website, I have nothing to do with it, but these guys are freaking brilliant. Somebody hand them a Guinness!!!

I haven't tried this with 2 iPhone's but I did do it with 2 sim cards.
Theoretically this should work and worth a try.

Since your husbands phone is already activated take his sim out and put it in your phone and sync it with iTunes. This will work for sure since this is what you do when you get a replacement phone from Apple.
Remove his sim card and insert your card and sync again, during the syncing a window will pop up on the iphone telling you that it can't connect with AT&T, just dismiss it or cancel it.
Now your phone is activated sans phone features :)

I did this with an extra sim I have from another phone and it worked as described above.

Good luck.

Duke - I tried swapping his activated/working iPhone SIM into the dead iPhone and nothing happened. It wanted me to activate. I got only an activation screen on iTunes. No matter what I did, the dead phone was just like if you opened the box.

Ouch, That's strange.
The phone should have been able to let you sync it or restore it with the activated sim card.
Try calling Apple and just say you swapped phones and see what they say.

Yea, I would think it would've let me. I guess the SIM card isn't the only part that's activated in the phone? IDK.

If you or anyone could advise what I should do exactly, I could always restore the hacked unactivated phone and try the SIM thing again.

Especially if it would then let me see YouTube!
