I'm trying to figure out what I want to do for Christmas so I'm just wondering...would you rather your own iPod touch or have to share an iPad.

Right now my number 1 drain of cellphone minutes is my mother. So I was considering getting myself an iPod touch and my mom one and we can Skype? I don't think I want to do face time with my mom every night...and then I can downgrade my cellphone plan...

I know of several apps that my parents would love...my dad more towards games and my mom towards health and nutrition. They would also want to check email which is probably not ideal on the iPod...

My dad likes to read and he needs reading glasses so the ipad wins there...

Also my dad is really big into fantasy football and he pays for some stat tracker thing on yahoo...I think the web version is flash but do they have an ios version as well? My dad would love that on the iPad.

I know they both like my ipad but I don't have to share so I don't know if the tradeoff would be worth the littler screen.

Why not just get another iPad? Its 50$ more expensive than two cheapest ipod touchs. and why are you buying it? Tell them to buy it..?

I take it you're not with the same mobile provider as your parents? Is that a possibility? If you aren't going to use video calling, there is no reason you couldn't skype between the iPad and an iPod touch.

For Christmas gifts I was thinking of getting my mom an iPod touch and my dad an iPod touch OR getting them an iPad to share. Both would be about $500.

And yea my mom only has a prepaid cellphone and a landline so I always call the landline which is why it uses minutes.

I want to get an iPod touch for myself regardless. I love my ipad but when I brought it to work everyone gave me crap about it because it is against policy to bring in personal computing devices...even though everyone has smart phones... But anyway nobody would even notice or care if I had an iPod touch out on my desk.

My ultimate goal is to be able to downgrade my cellphone to a dumb phone that would cost $25 a month and supplement the things I miss with an iPod touch. The $25 plan still has basic web browsing that I could use in a pinch...or I could add a mifi with unlimited data and still pay less per month than I do now on my phone.

But that is all just side thing because my first post was confusing.

My only reason for posting was to find out...would you rather have your own iPod touch or share an ipad with another person.

My parents started with one touch.... And now have two. They didn't share well apparently.

I did email fine on my touch, they don't do it on theirs. Depending on your dads vision issues, he may have a hard time with the screen. I have to hold the iPhone 4 out at arms length to see the screen, I much prefer my 3G touch had iPad. With is a highly personal problem I know! Lol!

It's really hard... Do you live near them? Can you get the touch and see how they like it then go from there?

Oh and I don't share my iPad well... I can share my touch better now that I have it though! :D

They live a little over an hour away...which is why my mom feels the need to talk every day haha.

I don't think my dad would be able to use a touch for reading. I know right now my dad would prefer the iPad...he didn't want to put mine down when I brought it home. I know he loves reading but he doesn't do it much anymore because of his eyes.

My mom I think would like certain things on the iPad...but I think she would have a hard time getting it away from my dad. I think she would be into the cooking apps and the food diary apps and maybe even the financial tracking things... I don't know how any of this stuff is on the touch. I know it is all usable for me on my android phone.

I wish I could afford 2 ipads because then none of this would matter. Pleeease have a BOGO sale on ipads on the day after thanksgiving!! Or even buy an ipad and get a touch for free!

Oh and my parents don't spend money on technology or gadgets. Most of their gadgets are either my hand me downs or gifts from me. They don't realize their needs for these things until I give them something and they become addicted.

hey i just wanna remind you that you can make phone call on gtalk now for free if you wanna save minutes

How? I tried doing this and when I try to make a call it calls my cellphone and it calls the other phone to connect.

I don't like sharing personal devices like that, I'd go for 2 iPod touches... especially those new ones!

Huh? She indicated that a touch would be unusable by her father? Don't buy a touch for someone who gave up reading due to poor eyesight. Why even consider that? I see 3 options:

1. They share a Ipad
2. Pony up for 2 Ipads
3. Rethink what you will be giving for presents this Christmas.

It wouldn't be unusable...just unusable to read books off of. That was just an additional feature I think my dad might enjoy as he used to read a lot. Since his eyes started getting bad he has been gaming a lot instead of reading. Mostly puzzle games on the ds and first person shooters on the ps3. There seem to be an infinite amount of puzzle games available for ios devices and the screen is about the size of the ds.

The other problem I have is that my dad is clumsy. He broke his ds by dropping it, he has lost several cellphones, he has put electronics through the washing machine...hmm I think it would be more likely to put an iPod through than an ipad so the iPad wins here! Maybe I can get one of each and they can share.

Or maybe I will just rethink this idea all together.

Consider shopping on the refurb store. Like new, same warranty, cheaper prices!

But I'd be apt to try the one of each too. You might be able to find some good deals right now on the "old" versions as kids try to sell off what they got free with their laptops for back to school.

The old ones aren't as sexy though!

I have decided I am just going to wait and not decide until around thanksgiving time. (hopefully if I do decide to go one of these routes, I can order then and still get it in time for Christmas) It is more money than I usually spend on gifts for my parents...I just figured if I started saving now, I might be able to swing it. I usually like to have an idea of what I want to get everyone early on so I can budget how much to save but I think I'm just going to try to save as much as possible and see what I come up with in a few months. I can't believe it is already September.

I reckon one of each is a good idea too. ipod touch so ur mum can skype/facetime u (i assume u both have wireless) and ipad so ur dad can play games AND read books. it's a lot healthier for ppl as they get older to have more brain exercising pastimes and i think reading is probably better than playing computer games! lol

but puzzle games are good too and there are plenty of them available in the app store!

they don't both have to be top of the range capacity wise so u can save some money that way. i'm sure an 8gb ipod touch and a 16gb wifi ipad will be adequate. not like ur parents are going to fill them up with songs and videos etc lol but this way u can also put family pictures on there too so they can look at them when they feel like it. i think they'd be awesome gifts!

i'm considering buying my dad an ipad for his 70th b'day this year too!
