2 iTunes Libraries?

Hi all,

I just got an external drive for my new 15" PowerBook because the 80GB HDD was fast running out of space. Anyway, one of my first jobs is to clear out some space on my PB by moving my iTunes library over to the external drive. However, if I do this I won't be able to access any of my songs when I'm not connected up to it.

So what I'm wanting to know is if it's possible to have my complete library on the external drive AND a smaller library that is kept on the PBs drive- this way when I'm not connected to the external drive I can still play all of my favourite songs without worrying about the whole library taking up needed space.

ok, and while everyone is pondering the above problem I have another one for you.

I go into iTunes preferences and make my itunes music folder location on my external drive instead of the default location on my PBs drive. However, each time I eject the external drive and then hook it up later, the itunes music folder location always changes back to the default location. It won't keep the location on the external drive like I want it to.

Any suggestions? i really don't want to have my entire music collection on my PBs hard drive- it just takes up too much space

Unless you want to manually organize your songs (and that way have the bulk on the external and the favorites on the internal HD) and just have one iTunes Library (where, of course, most of the songs will show up with a little warning that they cannot be found, and skipped, if the external isn't connected), you have at least two options:

- Make to different accounts on your Mac. Different accounts have different iTunes libraries.

- Search VersionTracker, Mac OS X Downloads or HyperJeff for iTunes tools that allow you to create multiple libraries (like the one found in the HyperJeff search ).

Thanks guys. I'm looking at a program from versiontracker now called Libra. Suppose to let you manage multiple itunes libraries. I'll see how it goes.

yep, Libra seems to be working pretty well at the moment. It requires itunes to close and re-open (done automatically) in order to change libraries but it's not a problem considering the troubles that i was having before when trying to organise everything

Libra works great for me, but I hope Apple integrates it with iTunes 7 (?).
