2 Macs - both running fast by different amounts

Hi all,

I recently was unable to log into a site using 2FA on my Mac. I finally realised that it was because my Mac was running about 1 minute fast.

I have an 1Phone and an iPad which are completely in sync (time wise). I was able to log in using my 2FA on those devices, so I can safely assume their time is correct.

I have an iMac which is consistently ~15 seconds fast and a Mac Air which is consistently ~1 minute fast.

Both Macs have recently has a fresh install of 10.11.5 (which may or may not be part of the problem). I have checked my settings and the timezone/location/timer server etc etc is all correct.

Has anyone got any ideas? ..I am finding it equally strange that both Macs are different to each other, let alone being incorrect.

You might take a peek at your system log and search for ntpd. You might find some log entries which could help you troubleshoot.

unfortunately, I had already "set time now" 2 days ago so will never know whether this fixed the problem - either way, ntp is working and the time has been right since I set the time manually. I will watch out over the next few weeks for drift.
