It is wireless on the MBP and ethernet on the Mac. It worked with my MBAir but not working with the new machine. If I go the Mac and under "GO" in the finder select network, I can see the MBP. But when I push "connect" I get an error message in the window on the Mac saying "Connection Failed" If I try again, it asks if I want to connect as guest, registered user or Apple ID. I have tried all 3 and none connect. The router is a netgear but that hasn't changed (and no settings have changed) since the time it worked with the MBAir.
Ah...I see.
Connecting as you describe (through the Go menu) is for file sharing, and assumes all machines are already on the network.
If you are indeed trying to connect from one Mac to the next to share files or view the remote desktop, you are in right place.
For sharing, you need
System Preferences/
Sharing to be on and configured on each machine you want to connect to.
You next have to enter the credentials of the machine you connecting to, as though you are sitting in front of it.
Can you verify that all machines are on your wireless network (can surf the web, etc.)? If yes—all Macs are on the same WiFi and can surf the web—come down to
file sharing configuration and right
User Name and
Password.
TIP:
On a home network, if every machine has the same admin account (name and password), when you connect to from any machine to any machine...you can simply use the same account credentials.
One always has to enter the credentials
to the machine you are connecting to....but if they are the same, there is nothing to change or remember.
CAUTION: The downside is that the same admin credentials work on multiple machines, which is less secure. If somebody discovers those credentials, they can assess
all the machines. You have to decide the level of risk vs. the level of convenience for your network, data, and possible users.
