uh oh i think there might be something wrong with my imac .. its a 20 inch g5, last revision.. Its been pretty good but sometimes it locks up, then the screen goes black, and then 30 seconds after the fans turn on and sound like a jet engine.. then the fans turn off.. screen still black and then they go back on.. this happens until i unplug the power..
then sometimes when i start up the imac, it hangs on the gray apple screen and nothing happens.. it is before the apple shows up... today when the screen was black i also heard a clicking noise from the lower lefthand of the imac.. What could be wrong?
I am going to call apple, see what they can do.. If i need to send it in to them, do i need to uninstall the gig of ram that i added after i bought the machine.. i have applecare, but it is within a year anyways..

My next question is i have an ipod mini that i hardly ever use.. i just wanted to use it a couple days ago and notice no matter how much i chare it, the thing wont go past 3/4 filled charge.. does the warranty cover this??

Give it to apple, they will either give you a logic board replacement and HD replacement or chance are a whole new computer maybe a new revision. I dont know about the ram, ask the support people about that.

Generally they fix your computer. If it's still under warranty, they'll take it for a while, and send it back to you working. I would try resetting the PMU first, just in case.

You're not likely to get a new computer out of it. If you've added RAM lately, then yes, take it out and see if the problem still exists. Otherwise, call Apple and tell them what's wrong. They'll take care of it, but make sure you back up your data before you send it off.

no i dont mean ive added ram lately, i got the ram the day i got the computer, i just mean i dont want them to say hey the ram not supported by us is the reason for the problem with the computer so ur not covered.. What about the ipod is that covered??

Do you have your hardware test CD that came with your iMac? Boot from it and it will try to see what's wrong. Back-up what you can.

yeah im going to look for that.. i think i will deal with it for a little while.. and if anything happens i will send it back.. but once the intel macs come out and have been out for a little while, then i will complain because i will have the slight chance of getting one..

And once the Intel iMacs come out, it will be much too late for you to get a new computer without paying for it. But you don't deserve a new revision at any point (only a working computer that you bought), so I wouldn't expect one...no point in getting your hopes up over nothing.

how do u figure it will be much to late?? They say new imacs will be out in january, and even if tha is not accurate, i still have another 2 or 3 years dont i?

Because you have a computer with a problem that can be repaired. Apple will fix the computer you own, because it's fairly easy to do so. There's no compelling argument to give you a new computer. Generally, one needs to have a computer serviced for the same problem about 3 times before they even consider a replacement, and that replacement tends to be whatever is best available. If they have a refurb iMac available, that's what you'll get at that point. Getting something two revisions newer is not something you should expect.

You paid for the iMac you own, and they'll fix it if it's got problems. That's all you should expect.
