2 questions.

I want to put a Windows partition on my MacBook, solely to play CS 1.6.

Will I be able to have Windows 98SE on it? I know it's just plain awful, but for the sake of playing one game I don't really want to be forking out for XP.

Will I be able to set that partition without havng to reinstall OSX/formatting?

Boot Camp only supports XP with SP2 - this is clearly stated in the documentation. Parallels supports Win98SE but if CS 1.6 (I don't know what that is) requires anything above fairly basic graphics capabilities then it's not going to be any good for you.

CS 1.6 (Counterstrike 1.6) is an online multiplayer FPS mod for Half life 1. Not particularly graphics intensive, it should run quite easily on a MacBook if on low/medium settings.

Sorry i missed the bit about only supporting XP + SP2 I think I'll have to give Parallels a miss as that will cripple game play.

If you go down the dual-boot road you use Boot Camp to partition the drive and burn the drivers CD. It's a non-destructive process so you won't lose any data or have to reinstall. You will have to select the format you want the partition for Windows to be in, either FAT32 or NTFS (FAT32 has a limit of I think 32GB and the partition has to be at least 10GB, you'll also lose ~5GB as a buffer) but other than that it's pretty painless.

Remember, after you're finished using Boot Camp you have a fully functional PC and you need never run Boot Camp again. Windows will be just as susceptible to viruses and spyware etc but these should not effect your Mac partition as Windows can't see HFS+ drives without 3rd party applications.

If you ever want to get rid of your Windows partiton, crank up Boot Camp again and delete the partition - you won't lose any Mac OSX data either this time.
