2 step verification for icloud?

So I set up 2 step verification and it works on the apple ID website where you change your address passwords etc but why doesn't it ask for 2 step verification when you log into icloud.com?

Is it supposed to be like this? I thought my icloud email and data would now be protected by being asked for a code every time you log in like gmail?

It only asks you for the two step verification when you access your account details, update your password, or make other changes to your account. It doesn't ask for the two step verification each time you log into your email or iCloud account.

2 step verification is required to get into the thing that lets me update my password, but NOT into the thing that can remotely format my ipad, iphone and mac.

No, what would be dumb would be requiring a code be sent to your iPhone in order to lock/format your lost iPhone...

From what I've read, the key is for when you CAN'T access your account. ie. forgot your password. It will then take you through the 2 step verification. Just remember though, if you choose to set up the 2 step verification, you need to REMEMBER the 16 digit key they provide you with. Take a screengrab, picture, write it down, etc... and store in a safe and memorable place, so that you have easy access to it even if your phone or computer goes down.

Apparently, from some people who set up a 2 step verification, but forgot their password, and can't find their 16 digit key, they were pretty much told they were SOL by Apple. Apple couldn't/wouldn't help them get back access to their account. They had to set up another account.
