When do you think a new iPad Pro will have 2 TB of storage ? In 1 year , 2 years or later ?

Doesn't a 1TB iPad hit the $1500 marker last I checked? Who's going to pay the $$$$ to go to 2TB? I can't imagine from Apple's perspective that too many people would do that to make it a profitable venture for them.

In 2018

11 1TB
$1449 Wi-Fi
$1699 LTE

12.9 1TB
$1649 Wi-Fi
$1899 LTE

In 2020

11 1TB
$1299 Wi-Fi
$1449 LTE

12.9 1TB
$1499 Wi-Fi
$1649 LTE

Considering 2TB upgrade on Macs are $400 more than the 1TB option, I agree, I don't see there being a big enough market for $1700-2100 2TB iPads.

I'm a storage hog (20TB file server) and honestly, even 1TB is pretty comfortable for me on the iPad. ~150-200GB covers what I consider essentials (app, iCloud Photo originals, favorite manga/comics) and the rest is just used for fat (more manga/comics from the to-be-read pile, movies, TV series, etc).

Even my laptops and desktops are fine with a 1TB main drive (OS, apps, scratch space, etc).

Granted, just a thought. M1 Macs already offer 2TB as a BTO configuration and the NAND is likely a shared component between M1 Macs and iPads. It may be a trivial matter for Apple to make 2TB iPads and make more money from those willing to pay the storage tax.

I just can't imagine dealing with that many files on iPad OS. I've got 43.98GB in my iCloud (not counting 116GB photos). That's 15,597 files. I couldn't imagine trying to deal with that on an iPad. lol.

I guess that works more for people who do video editing and other things. (I do none of that).

I am similar as you. My iPad is 512 GB and I use just 200 GB currently. I have 1.5 TB(two drives) on my laptop and I still have not used more than 500 GB. I would not advise less than 256 GB (even 512 GB) but 2 TB seems too much for me. At least based on my experience I would not use it fully and I would only end up paying a lot.

I know that video editing can take a lot of time but in this case I would advise backup on external SSD drives and not storing everything on the device.

Oh, I can easily use the space. I think I'm just at 20% free space on each of my iPads (Air 3 256GB, 512GB Pro 10.5 & 12.9). That said, there's quite a bit of fat that can be trimmed from the 512GB.

However, I do like being able to store movies and TV on device. My comics/manga took up all the space on the 256GB and lower iPads so back then, watching videos were streaming only (on month-long vacations, I carried a laptop+4TB 2.5" HDD as portable Plex Server for the family). The 512GB was the first time I could actually store videos on device. 1TB would allow me to store more movies and TV series as well as allowing for a bigger comic library.

Thanks everyone for the interesting discussions.

Yes I agree with most of you all no one really need a 2TB iPad. Though it is nice when you have no internet!

Yeah. Pre-pandemic, I traveled a lot to places where there is poor or no Internet connectivity so I don't use cloud services. An SSD serves as good storage but I've always been one who prefers on-board storage.

Same here. When I had my previous iPad I’d sometimes hit the 256gb limit because of all the content I’d download along with my entire music library. I’m pretty sure that won’t be a problem with the 1TB model I have now. No need to deal with carrying an external SSD and connecting it.

There are two spaces on the current iPad motherboards for NAND chips, so assuming they stick with that it's going to be whenever Apple can source two NAND chips at a reasonable price that can deliver 2TB.

I have no basis on which to say this, but would guess it will be a year or two before that happens.

Of course Apple could easily make more room on the motherboard for more NAND chips if it wanted to, but I think 2TB on an iPad Pro is going to be fairly niche for a while yet, so perhaps doesn't merit the board space.

I feel like I have a decent amount of music/photos/movies/etc and I use around 200 GB on my mac, less on my ipad (which has less overhead for system files and such). I can't imagine how much stuff you'd need laying around to fill 2 TB on an ipad.

Isn't this the same setup on M1 Macs already (2 NAND chips)? This is why I think it's feasible for them to offer it on the upcoming iPad Pros. Whether Apple thinks there's a big enough market for it to bother with is the question.
