Is this combination okay? I have currently 2 x 2gb ram in my imac but was thinking of putting in the 2 x 1gb spare ram i have from my unibody macbook pro from when i upgraded?

The memory has to be

1066 MHz, PC3-8500, DDR3 compliant (also referred to as DDR3 1066)

(pulled straight from he 27" iMac manual)

You have to remember, the iMac is just a laptop computer with a big screen and a stand.

That is no longer entirely true. Desktop hard drives. DESKTOP CHIPS on the high end - the new quads i5 and i7 are both desktop chips. With these two elements being desktop, you're a desktop.
