"In the comments section of this very blog (and in a follow-up conversation with me), Mac radio host Shawn King reports that AT&T’s monthly unlimited data plan for the iPhone will be $20. AT&T’s current “SmartPhone Unlimited” plan is — you guessed it — $20.

Meanwhile, “Boy Genius Report” says that according to a “pretty high up source” the “iPlan” will “be around $34.99-$44.99.”

Put them both together and it sounds like we’re talking about $55-65 a month for your iPhone service. Not dirt cheap, but not at all out of line with what people are paying for existing data phone plans.

Thanks to Shawn King for weighing in repeatedly on this one — you can read more in the comments."

disagree with the conclusions, total monthly cost may be total voice+$20 for data

Do really think a data plan alone for the iphone will be anything over $40?

Knowing Apple, and what they have discussed with AT&T, i have a feeling its going to come out dirt cheap. Cheap as in under $25.

I'm really hoping to keep my $10 voice on family plan and add $25-$35 for unlimited texts and unlimited data. Wishful thinking, but I don't really see how AT&T can charge more than $25 for EDGE speeds.

This is one of the dumber things I've ever read.
They guy added $20 (a guesstimate for the price of unlimited data) to $35 (another guesstimate for the price of unlimited data).

There's no voice in this equation, just two estimates of data cost.... that were for some unknown reason.... added together.

agreed.

Does anybody know if the $20 unlimited plan offered to current smartphones includes text?
Although I don't use more than 1,000 text messages in a month ($10), it might be just as good a deal to have the unlimited data and texts for $35 a month.
I'd gladly settle for the $20 and $10 still for texts, but I'm on a family plan with my sister, who also plans on picking up an iPhone but currently pays $20 for unlimited texts.

Yeah why did you add the two guesses of what the data plan might cost together?

That would be like me saying, well porsche is coming out with a new car in 2008. One person says it will cost $75,000 and another guy says it will cost $125,000 and me deciding that means the new Porsche will cost $200,000.

Yeah, i was confused as to why he added them together. I'm hoping it comes in less than $50/month for voice+data. Perhaps we'll find out tomorrow!

I know that the $20 AT&T MediaMax plan includes 200 texts.. ha. I didn't know the Smartphone Connect was only $20. I wish they woud have one data plan for any cell phone. I can understand a different plan for tetherng, though. The $20 iPhone plan seems the most plausible.

I don't need an iPhone at all. I rarely want to surf the internet without being at home, but the iPhone is so cool. I want one. At least I could combine my iPod and my cell phone, but I have no need for email or EDGE internet. I would be happy with wifi. I hope one can cancel this "iPlan" and just pay for voice. 400 minutes is more than enough for me.

i have the media max 200 plan for my razr .. i rarely text so 200 a month is plenty for me .. i do not want to pay $40 + for data only a month .. so $20 a month would be wonderful and i'd have no second thoughts on the iphone.

I'd first put my money on neither of these two people knowing what they're talking about.

After that, I would put my money on somewhere between/around $20 - $30. There's a critical mass element to this. I think anything over $30 will be prohibitive and result in less sales than under.

$60/mo w/ 450 national anytime, nights/weekends, rollover, unlimited data, WiFi, and 1000 text would be pandemonium. If I had to guess, this will come out Wedneday evening or Thursday morning and fanboys everywhere won't be able to sleep.

Okay, let's restate this info in a more readable format:

  • Bob, using his iPhone, is on a train heading toward C at N miles per hour.
  • Joe, using his iPhone, is on a plane flying from G to U at Y knots.
  • Susan needs to bake Z pies to feed X students in her son's J-th grade class... all of whom have iPhones.
  • When does Carl begin paying down the principle of his 30-year fixed mortgage? (Assume he doesn't have an iPhone.)

Or better yet, if S+L=E^4, solve for H, assuming V-B(A/O!)=R=Q+P-3/0.

---

The info hasn't been released publicly, so made up numbers don't matter. Even worse, adding made up numbers just makes my head hurt.

Man, I hope this is true!! They would sell like crazy!! I will definitely get one--maybe even 2 then--one for my wife also!

Let's clear this up...

You can get an unlimited data plan from AT&T for $20. This doesn't include text. So if you get unlimited data plus 200 text you're looking at $25. I was told by an AT&T employee who I contacted today that I would be able to keep my family plan intact, and have my voice stay the same, just like any other upgrade when your contract has expired. So I don't see how any "iPlan" is going to be forced on me or any other customer at a higher price than their current highest unlimited data plan.

My current portion of the family plan equals out to 400 minutes anytime (plus rollover which is MASSIVE at this point) plus nights and weekends at a price of $25. So add $20-$25, and the most I'm going to be paying per month under an iPhone is $45/month. I was paying more for texting plus walkie talkie plus voice through Nextel three years ago. Can't complain about a $45/month unlimted data plus virtually unlimited voice plan.

It certainly wont be LESS than $20. Your plan is going to cost at least $39 for the phone, so with taxes we're talking around 65-70 bucks if it's that little for it.

according to the AT&T site with my zip typed in heres what i get.

Total - $89.98

Pretty reasonable to me. I hope apple doesnt change it.

This is really getting on the verge of being insanity. After all, people are obsessing over NON-FACTUAL figures! We know NOTHING yet of the specific voice and data plans from AT&T, and ALL figures thus far are for OTHER plans. After all, the AT&T CEO, while admitting that they want future iPhone buyers to also purchase "some sort" of unlimited data plan, also spoke of iPhone-specific plans. That means, NOT any of the existing plans. What that means is that we will not know until AT&T disseminates that specific information.

I've actually seen lots of posts where the posters indicate hatred for either Apple or AT&T, based ENTIRELY on speculative figures. Enough already! Just wait for the official word, will you?
