Seems a bit early for them to be dumping stock and pretending it is "refurbished".

I guess I am just not used to Apple selling actual refurbished items in that store...

Actually, Apple calls machines like this "refreshed". Refurbished machines have cosmetic defects or have been repaired in some way. When Apple wants to dump stock they either lower the price or stop making them until inventory drops. I can't see any point in pretending new machines are refurbished.
