There were 2 iterations of the above (aluminium) display. The first one was released in 2004 and the 2nd was introduced in and known as 'Late 2005'. The trouble is they used the same model/order codes (A1081/M9177LL/A) although there are some spec differences. I have one here and I want to obtain another the same. Can anyone suggest how I can identify the one I have and hence to ensure any new acquisition is the same?

That should still use Apple's old system for serial numbers. I don't know about that Cinema Display model but Apple usually puts serial numbers on the bottom.
PPYWWSSSCCC

PP = Manufacturer
Y = Year
WW = Week
SSS = Unique Identifier
CCC = Model Number

Here is a tool that still works for those serial numbers. I just tried it on my 2006 Mac Mini and it worked. Gave the list of specs it came with and the date/manufacture information look correct based on deciphering data I found.

I had discovered the old serial number decoding method which is really useful. But thanks for that link which will be really useful for newer products.
