20" iMac Crashes After a few Hours of Use

We were making a video, had 22 minutes of video in iMovie HD 06, all edited with titles and such when the the thing crashed!

It asked to relaunch, we did but only got about 8 minutes of the video. So frustrating after several hours of putting this all together.

New Alu iMac, 2GB RAM. We have Fancontrol installed and had them cranked. (it was smokin' hot)

Would Final Cut Express do the same thing? Do I need to cut a hole through the wall of the house and stick half of it outside during the winter? If it were cooler would the chance of it crashing be less?

Programs do crash from time to time (even boring, non-intensive programs like Word), so it'd be incorrect to immediately assume that the problem is temperature related. I'd uninstall fancontrol if I were you - I have an Al-iMac too, and am quite happy to leave the fans running at Apple's default settings.

Yeah, the iMacs do get warm, but you'd hope that Apple's engineers knew what they were doing when they designed the cooling system. I reckon they did.

I downloaded over 100GB of clips to iMovie HD this past weekend and did hours of rendering on the iMac 2.8. It was rock solid and got only slightly hotter than usual according to iStat.

I've read the 24" does not have the heat issues like the 20"?

But thats cool it worked for you.
