Occasionally when using my 20" iMac, I hear a high pitched squeal from my speakers. Usually turning the volume up one or down one "plop" using the keyboard stops it for a while. Does anyone know why something like this happens? Could it be my speakers, or the iMac itself? I tested the same speakers on my PowerBook, and it doesn't produce the squeal.

I take the bus, so I do not want to have to lug this iMac on the bus to go to the Apple store (Even though I took it home on the bus :D) This iMac is almost brand new.

Also, it doesn't happen when there are no speakers plugged into the iMac, so the iMac speakers are fine, it only happens when I plug in my external speakers, and the squeal comes from my external speakers.

This is sadly very common.

I notice the same squeal when I plug in headphones into my iMac.

I forgot the reason for this, but I know it has something to do with Asus's motherboards and their connection to the audio out jack.

Your best bet to get rid of the squeal would be to either buy an external sound adaptor like the iMic, or USB powered Speakers.

You could goto the Apple store, and see if there is something they could do for you, but i'm not sure if there's much they can possibly do.

I guess the only solution would be to turn off my external speakers when I do not need sound.

I have the same problem, with new 2.8GHz 24" model of iMac.
Any solutions since this topic started?
I live in poland, where we don't have any real apple store, only some resellers, so I can't say a word...
I'm getting frustrated of last Apple products quality and thinking about changing It for some linux pc box...

Take care.
