Hello,

Our 20" iMac arrived today.

Mega stoked it came, and only took a week to get here from Shanghai (BTO).

It does however have the gradient issue on the screen, which isn't a problem for the uses it is getting. However, does anyone know Apple's take on this?

It came pre-installed with Leopard, which is nice in one way, but I was hoping for Tiger because I prefer using it.

Whatever I guess.

It is such a massive screen, even being only the 20" and I am seriously happy to have made the purchase.

It replaced a very very worn out Dell desk top computer and is an addition to my 17" G4 PowerBook.

Another point you might be interested in, when I ran software update, I didn't have download the firmware update for the graphics card. So it is installed on the machine. Let's hope it is a freeze free iMac.

Alex.

Well, I just went out quickly, and turned it off (Althought I can't actually remember if I did turn it off) and when I got home and wanted to show a friend it won't turn back on!!!

OMG what is going on? I am devastated!

HELP!

My parents computer ships from Shanghai

Hold down the power button for like 10 seconds. It's plugged in of course?

Are custom builds all sent from China?

I held it down for 10 seconds, nothing.

I've changed the fuse in the plug and that hasn't helped.

Any more ideas?

Apple care centre is closed in the UK so I can't get any help from them.

Oh no. :(

Does it sound like it is on? Any noise? If you hear something, try turning up your screen brightness using the keyboard. There is a dimmer switch there. Is it just dead quiet? If so, I have no other ideas. Maybe trying a different power source.

Nope, it's dead quiet. Absolutely nothing at all.

I checked Apple's site and it said to remove and reinstall the ram, but the diagrams they had on their web site didn't correspond to my computer at all. So I am giving that a wide berth.

Looks like I am going to have to drive 50 miles to the Apple store tomorrow.

Gutted.

I have no faith in the new Macs now. My G4 PowerBook has been going strong, obviously when Macs were built with quality and design, not just one of them.

Well, I hope this makes you feel better. I have a 20 inch iMac and it works great. Of course, I did have a hard time installing leopard because of my prior clumsy unix hacking "neooffice" in 10.4. My parents just ordered a new iMac, I hope they have no problems.

Thanks for the link, but it isn't applicable to my iMac, I've already checked it out.

So I phoned Apple and they offered to replace it or give a refund.

I got a refund and bought another iMac from an Apple retail store.

Pretty disappointed with the whole ordeal, considering a few years ago my 17" PB was perfect from the word go (and touch wood is still good).

The iMac however is an amazing machine. So stoked with the screen, no gradient L - R and little washed out colour at the bottom and not to mention no dead pixels, or dust behind the screen.

It was a Tiger machine this time and I think it is going to stay that way. I did like Leopard when I used for the few hours on the previous machine to this.

A slightly happier iMac owner.
