i haven't seen any complaints for a few weeks, have newer models had the issues that the 20" resolved (like the screen model replaced quietly) or have people simply stopped buying them in sted of the 24"?

i would love an 20" the size is far more practical for me

Maybe there's something wrong with my eyes, but there's no hint of a gradient on the 20" iMac I purchased in September. It is, without doubt, the finest screen I've ever owned. I suspect in many cases people are seeing gradients that aren't really there (- the mass delusion of crowds and all that).

But, yeah, go into an Apple dealership and check for yourself.

Sorry, Leon says your screen DOES have a gradient and that's that. :p

Exactly right. Go to see one in person and trust your own eyes rather than pundits and conspiracy theorists in user forums.

No picture on the Internet is going to substitute for it either. Just trust your own eyes.
