I'm buying the higher-end 20" iMac...how much ram can I add externally. I know it comes with 1GB & up to 4 can be added, but does this have to be added from apple or can I just add stick myself to reach 4GB?

Apple lists in this article that you will need RAM that features the following:

  • PC2-5300
  • Unbuffered
  • Nonparity
  • 200-pin
  • 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
  • You can use RAM module sizes of 1 or 2 GB in each slot.

I would recommend buying the iMac with 1GB of RAM and buying 3rd-party RAM to upgrade to XGB you want, Apple's RAM seems to be a bit pricey.
