I wonder whether you may be able to help me with a problem my 20 inch intel core duo mac is having. Basically i need to know whether its a hard drive issue for not.

My mac started to switch itself off completely with no warning.
Recently it will literally come on for a few minutes and go off again. I then have to wait some time (and i usually n plug it and re plug it in) before it works again.

I wonder whether something has been dislodged perhaps.

Im poised to go and buy a new hard drive but if you think its something more serious then i wont bother.

It's not a hard drive issue.

It sounds more like a Power Supply Unit or Logic board fault.

If it's the Logic board it can be an expensive repair. Best thing to do is take it to an Apple store and they will run a hardware test for you. They wont charge for the test but be prepared for them to tell you some bad news.

I had the same issue with my PPC 20" iMac and was quoted over £350 so i put the money towards a new Mac.

Agreed! I had the same problem with my old iMac. I had a new logic board fitted at an Apple approved Service Centre for c £300. This lasted until I bought a new machine.

Not the HD.
