20" Intel iMac, any issues so far?

Just wondering if anyone has experienced any annoying problems with the Intel iMac, my girlfriends father is looking to get one. He is looking to get the 20" maxed out and is still debating whether or not he should buy a refurb for 1399.99 or a new one for 1699.99. Also, do you think boot camp and all the software will be too confusing for him? He's an engineer but if it's gonna be too complicated to set everything up to work on both windows and OS tiger then there is no point going this route. Thanks!
 
If one follows the directions for Bootcamp EXACTLY there should be no problem.There will be a BIG problem if not followed exactly..Not knowing your girlfriends dad it would be hard to say.It depends on how computer savvy he is.
 
well, he's a civil engineer and he catches on pretty quick.

...so there have been no problems with the 20" Intel iMac?

no screen issues like backlighting?

no fan or noise issues?

it's gonna be decked out so I'm freakin' excited for him...since it'll be his first Mac.

No real issues product wise... although these issue arrive in every computer in isolated cases.

The imac is a superb piece of kit.
 
No problems with either of mine. I have the 20" and a 17" inch in this house, and both work perfectly. Bootcamp is extremely easy to set up, and a person would have to be a complete idiot to screw anything up. My father is an Engineer with a Doctorate, and he had no problems.
 
mine didnt wake up from sleep ONCE. I rebooted it, and as usual it runs like a dream. Ive had my 20" for about 5 weeks and I couldn't be happier.

I have had no problems with the wireless mouse and keyboard under XP running Parallels. Can't speak for Boot Camp.

Yeah under boot camp its a different story. For Parallel the wireless kb and mouse appear as wired to XP so that why no probs for u.
 
I'm looking at getting an iMac 20" v.soon and about to sell my PPC Mac Mini to help fund it. Got the Mac bug with my toe in water Mini and now ready to take the full leap to Mac Heaven :D

Anyone know if there are any "rumoured" updates to the iMac coming in the next few months?
 
I hit the order button on friday with mine Andy, there will probably be an update when they stick the Core Duo 2 chip inside (merom or conroe)

Honestly that's the nature of the tech industry, whats hot and new today is mainstream in a month. There is no escaping the cycle. While we may curse it up and down, it just shows that we are progressing at lightning pace in technology.

I will give a complete review of mine when I get it, it's going to be my first Mac so I'm crossing my fingers.

Yeah totally agree. I'd only be gutted if I ordered on a Friday and a brand spanking way improved system came out on Monday. But no, if I lay down the dough for a top line system that does what I want, my needs aren't gonna suddenly change over night because a new system comes out.

Thats it....I've cursed it now. The day after I order an iMac cue the 30" iMac with quad Core Duo's and a VR headset for total immersion. :D
 
With LCD prices dropping thru the floor I will be upset if by this time next year there isn't a 23 inch iMac with 1920x1200 resolution.

One can only speculate into such matters but i'm not going to derail your thread.

I think the current GUESS is August-October, with new Intel out then that will be faster and be 64 bit (iirc) which should lead to speed boosts when the software all catches up. I am waiting for this 2nd rev to decide to buy for this and other likely upgrades - like the screen which I want to be the same resolution density as the MBPs.

OT - Hey, this could be real soon as the screens haven't been updated in ages and NAB is on now... I think we might also see intergrated isights and ir recievers.
 
I doubt that the screen density will increase anytime soon, for one thing the OS isn't resolution independent, that and there are currently no factories making 20 inch 1920x1200 panels.

There are people making 17 inch 1920x1200 panels, and I bet we will start seeing those in MacBook Pro's once a resolution independent OS comes out (hopefully 10.5)

Your going to be waiting for a while buddy :)
 
On the Intel iMac yes, you just need to buy a mini-dvi to dvi cable from apple.

This information is quite easy to find, next time read the wiki or use google.

So to paraphrase it does it mean the x1600 in the iMac is basically a x1600 in name only but for all intents and purposes performs like a lesser x1400? :rolleyes:

You may note from my posts I am revising for exams, so time is a bit of a premium to me at the moment.
 
I'm considering going from my iMac G5 1.8GHz 20" rev.A 2/250 to an "equivalent" iMac Intel Core Duo 20"2/250.

What is appealing to me is the videocard (X1600 with the 256Mb option, instead of my lame 64Mb-whatever), the chips, as well as the rest of the new components (and solving some former technical issues) :)

Now, I've read some comparison charts where it shows that part of iLife'06 could actually run slower than on the last iMac G5 2.1GHz, despite being universal. (It concerns iPhoto and iMovie mostly). As I work a lot on iMovie these days, I'm a little concerned... :confused:

Anybody here has done a switch similar to mine? Is that all-better or good-and-bad-points ?

I'm sure the new iMac is a very good machine, but I'm not so sure about the transition between similar machines.

Btw, I wish there were a FW800 port on the new iMac... :(
 
decided to do the switch from pc to mac and just bought a 20" imac earlier this week and received it two days later. i set it up, and found that there was a chip on the frame of the computer (the clear plastic part). i called to have it exchanged (sent it back yesterday and they received it today). they just sent out my replacement today. i was reading the different threads about people returning their computers and getting refurbs. is this true? also, how can one tell that their computer is a refurb? i hope i got a brand new spankin one since this is my first mac!
