Anybody think apple will release a 20" LED cinema display with mini display port?

I guess they will wait for all those who are going to buy the 24" to buy, then make the cheaper (hopefully) 20".

As they've recently made 24" the sort of de facto standard size for iMacs, I would say it is doubtful they make a new 20" cinema display.

Apple better make a 20" LED ACD. There's definitely a market for it (mainly for the Mac mini). As for making the 24" model on the iMac the main model, I think it's a premature move (given that they've had to use a 9400M to make some of the money back).

To my knowledge Apple has never had a price competitive display to pair with the Mini. It's still marketed to work with your existing keyboard, mouse, and display.

If they do release one, for potential mini customers it would be cheaper to get into the 20" iMac as opposed to a $600 mini, $600 display and $100 mouse/keyboard set.

I still maintain we can say 24" is the de facto standard size for iMac now. There is only one config of 20" that still has the 9400M, compared to 2 configs the prior revision. If there was a high-end 20" and low-end 24" that were price comparable, it is more likely a toss-up on de facto size of displays.

I don't personally think the 20" ACD has been a big seller in previous years, but that is based on seeing MANY 23" new 24" and 30" ACDs everywhere. With the whole Mac selling points, I guess only the mini buyers would want a 20" ACD. AND, is a mini buyer even buying an Apple display? I think most mini buyers are switchers or using it in maybe a server role. Switchers have their old Dell and HP 20" displays from the last five years sitting around. People using the mini as a "server" don't really need the 20" display either as using another display for the rare need or using a TV as the display for media viewing.

I had never really thought the 20" ACD was dead, but I guess Apple could probably make a better case for larger displays than smaller ones. Maybe the 24" is the new "small" standard. In that case a 28" and 32" may compliment it??? Maybe larger... like 30" and 36"???

I do think Apple is going to come up with a matte 24" ACD when it updates its 30" ACD and probably add one more size unless the 20" is not dead???

Any way you look at it, I would THINK we will find out the answer within a few months, at longest. An answer could come with an announcement as early as Tuesday of this week.

A 20" LED LCD display is not going to happen. The price would be right if Apple wanted to put it out, but as we've seen with the iMacs, 24" is the minimum size for any Apple screen from now on (other than the "low-end" 20" iMac.)

The 30" won't be updated for a while, as the cost is still prohibitive. Two or three other companies offer 30" LED displays, and the cost is over $2800. I can see a $2499 Apple 30" LED display, but component prices still need at least another 6 months to drop.

Interesting news about the 30" ACD with LED. I had no clue the LED was so expensive. I have thought various different things since Apple axed the 23" ACD. I figured we would definitely see a matte replacement just like the 24" LED for the Mac notebooks.

Now, the new 24" LED ACD is truly made for the Mac notebooks. Apple has told us that, and it seems rather obvious as it is like a docking station for Mac notebooks while power cable doesn't make any sense for Mac desktops.

I think Apple is waiting on something or just sold more of the 23" before could have the new ones ready. Maybe projections were off. The whole thing of buying a new MAC PRO, is the limitation of only ONE 24" ACD with a Mini Display Port. They don't even have the 23" with DVI to run as a second display. The new Mac Pro has one DVI and one Mini Display Port standard with ONE video card.

It seems odd to me that those buying a brand new Mac Pro, cannot buy a 24" matte ACD or even two or four 24" ACDs (not even current LED) without two or more graphics cards. In fact, if someone wants a Mac Pro with FOUR 24" ACDs, they have to buy FOUR Nvidia graphics cards (could support EIGHT displays but only four using mini Display Port). As the cards support one mini display port and one DVI. That seems like a common want for a Mac Pro buyer.

I know the 30" ACD is available to Mac Pro buyers, but it seems ready for an update too. Even if it costs more money, I think Apple could make more money with NEW Apple Cinema Displays. I had read some well, RUMORS, that Apple was buying up 22" and 28" displays for something. Maybe was not a fact. I had figured we would see some off sized iMacs. Maybe we will see some different sized ACDs.

Was odd to me that the new iMacs didn't have LED displays, but again your pricing information could explain that.

To me, it seems like matte NEW LED ACDs are coming sooner rather than later. Even if the price is steep, I can imagine a lot of people buying BIGGER ACDs. Yet again pointing at the end of the 20" ACD. Maybe it will be six months or longer as you stated???

What about all of the older Mac owners who want anything other than a 30" ACD, NOT AVAILABLE! It seems that Apple is writing off a lot of business without introducing a DVI cable that allows older Mac users to run a new 24" ACD with mini display port... It also is writing off a lot of business to people who want a matte external display even if they do own a new Mac capable of running the mini Display Port displays.

Come on Apple, how about some new Apple Cinema Displays!

What? The last revision had dedicated graphics in the whole line-up? I think historically the 20" + Mac mini was slightly cheaper than the iMac, but you sacrificed speed.

I wasn't implying that the iMac had integrated graphics prior to this revision.

The last revision did have dedicated graphics across the whole line. Now, however, you can't get a 20" with dedicated graphics, so to argue that it is premature for the 24" to be de facto since they put integrated graphics on the low-end 24" doesn't mean that 24" is not the main size for the iMac now.

When the 24" was first introduced, I believe there were two 17" configs, a 20" config, and 24" config.

When the redesign happened there were two 20" configs and two 24" configs.

Now there is one 20" config and three 24" configs.

I believe at its cheapest the 20" cinema display ($599) + low-end mini ($599) + mouse/keyboard was still more expensive than the low-end 20" aluminum iMac.

Edit:

To put it another way, while there existed a 17" low-end iMac, the smallest display sold by Apple for a Mac Mini was 20".

That low-end 17" spot is now occupied by a low-end 20" iMac. It makes perfect sense for Apple's product line for the smallest display offered by Apple is 24".

I don't really need the history lesson seeing as I've been following Apple for 5 years now ;) Also I never said the 24" isn't the main size right now. I'm just saying that to make it the main size, they had to sacrifice graphics (going from a year old 2600 Pro to a 9400M is a downgrade).

Also I'm pretty sure before the Mac mini's drought of updates, the mini + 20" ACD was slightly cheaper than the iMac. But I can't really be bothered to look for hard data :D Anyway, this is in the MBA section and a 20" ACD + MBA would be a good combo too.

The 20" Cinema Display is dead. :(

+1 for this. It's going the way of the dodo bird. With the price of LCD screens dropping it's getting harder and harder to find 17 and 19 inch screens in the stores. Soon 20 inch screens will be in the same boat.

Not many people buy 20" anymore. Take a look around Best Buy or any local electronics store. It seems like 22" is the bare minimum with 24" being the sweet spot.

As posted above, the 20" ACD's were never really even marketed to Mac mini users. The actual display itself costed the same as the actual computer itself, and went against BYODKM(Bring your own display, keyboard and mouse).

I predict a 30" LED display later this year that will have a matte option. Pro's have been demanding a matte display and as seen by the 17" MBP, Apple will listen.

Thank you, this was what made me start the thread.

The nice thing about the new MBA is it can easily drive a 24" ACD. The 24" ACD goes perfect with it. AND, could even work with a 30" ACD. It really is a beautiful image and amazing that a MBA can drive either of those displays. Real power...

You could wait it out to see if Apple releases a 20" ACD to go with your MBA. Or, you could buy a 20" refurbished ACD for $499. Just get a mini display port to DVI cable for $29 and you're set. If you really want a 20" ACD the option is still there for a refurbished last generation model.

Although not LED.

Best wishes.

And not in the UK...

I was hoping for a 20" because I don't have a desk big enough for anything bigger! I am more interested in having the ACD as a permanent dock so when I want to sit and do some real work, I just plug in my MBA and am ready to go.
