My roommate tells me that the latest Android phones are 200MP. Why would anyone want a 200MP camera? The files would be huge!!! Do these cameras exist? My iPhone 12 is 12MP. My Powershot is 20MP but I shoot at 10MP.

A 200MP sensor has been created by Samsung the "ISOCELL HP1" and from what I can tell it is rumored that the Motorola Frontier 22 will have it later this year. The sensor itself supports 2x2 50MP and 4x4 pixel binning 12.5MP photos for low light.

I agree that the file sizes will be insane, my guess is the higher MP count is also needed with the algorithms to support the massive zooms that some phones like the 20, S21 and S22 can do. Even if you look at the differences in how the phone handles the really zoomed in images and more resolution probably helps "fill in the blanks" as opposed to a straight lower MP sensor. (not 100%, but that is my best guess because I wouldn't see any other reason for such large photos)

200 MP would be great, but not in a phone sensor. A medium or large format system offering 200 MP would be amazing. Phase one currently offers a 150 MP back with 16 bit color but I'm not ready to spend $50K. :D

Looks sort of about Hasselblad sized. Would love to see a 4x5 back coming in at around $10-15,000.

By the time that shows up I'll be too old to lug the 4x5 around any more.

It's going to definitely need the pixel binning that they suggest is the best use case for it. The native pixel pitch is tiny and a 200MP image on a 1/1.22 sensor would be a noise machine, I'd think, at anything but base ISO. But they call for pixel 4:1 or 16:1 pixel binning which makes much more sense.

200MP is useless on a small cell phone sensor. Now on a big sensor where you have room to store the data has it's purpose. Most normals don't need that much though.

I am satisfied with my iPhone an iPad cameras.

Great, as are most people. They do have their limitations though. Of course it's less to do with the amount of pixels and more the quality of the sensor.

I’m guessing it’s to create credible digital zooms in phones until they go truly next gen and make half the rear casing an actual lens.
