Just saw this and thought it was quite interesting, enjoy:

He's all over the place in this video. He says the Mac Pro CPU is 3.3Ghz, but it's 3.7 in the description, says he has D500s but it says D300s in the description, and doesn't mention the size of the SSD.

The machine he mentions in the description is only $3,000, not $4,000. It's also from 3 years ago (if you count the GPUs, up to 5) so for the time, $3,000 is actually fairly reasonable (although not any more). So his point is a bit muddled. If you bought this machine now, it's a little overpriced, but at the time it was a good deal. You couldn't spec a machine to the same level for the same price back in 2013.

The title of the video is deliberately sensationalist so as to be clickbait.

He might as well get an original Macintosh and say "Oh look, I've just built a PC for less than this retailed at back in the 1980s and it's waay faster". Yes, it would be. It's 2016..

What's the point of this thread? If you like the custom rig, go build it.

Pretty much. You could build a cheaper rig yourself back when the nMP released, and it was the same deal with every generation of the Mac Pro before it.

Yeah I don't understand the drive to always tell people to build their own PCs. I mean you know you can have restaurant quality food every day, every meal, if you only go to chef's school and spend all day cooking! There are things I know how to do, and things I don't care to learn how to do. I know OS X fairly well, I don't know Windows at all. I know photo editing and video editing really well, but I don't know how to make my own editing software so I pay Adobe to do it for me. I have NO interest in building my own computer, nor would I know where to start. I pay Apple to do these things for me, and it's fine. If I had bought a Mac Pro 3 years ago, it would still be performing my intended tasks reasonably well today, and I would be aware that newer machines would be faster, and it's still fine.
