2006 iMac question

Hello all. I'm new to the forums. I have a question.

I have a 2006 Intel iMac and the person I bought it from installed Snow Leopard on it, but it is giving me a hard time. The screen freezes, sometimes the screen goes black and restarts. Or the 'rainbow of death' spins after awhile...I try to reinstall SL and it freezes on me. Could it be the HD or is it Snow Leopard? Please help if possible. Thanks.

Try reinstalling the memory.

Try running a full disk repair after booting up from the Snow Leopard DVD.

Can't really be Snow Leopard's fault cause I've got SL running on my ageing 06 Intel iMac

But yes, try messing around with memory and disk repairs. It *could* be the HDD. Does the SL installation freeze during what is presumably during the time it's transferring files over? If it does it beforehand while you're entering details then it could be a memory issue?

Could be the hard drive, too. (physically damaged, I mean)

It's not too hard to replace the HDD (see ifixit.com)

Im afraid your mother board is Fu**ed!

I've had the same problem along with hundreds of others.

It can only be fixed by replacing the entire logic/mother board and that costs £500 here in the UK. Which cost allot more than the value of the imac!!!!

You can try installing smc fan control, which speeds up the fans and seems to help it stop freezing and crash as often.

But their is no cure, I would be very peed off with the person you bought it from unless he made it very clear it had this massive problem.

If it makes you feel any better, hundreds have experienced the same issue, and its apple and intel that should be at fault. Do a google search and you will find allot of stuff on the issue.

Hope you find a solution though for your computing needs. Try smc fan control set them to max and you may get some useful if not noisy life out of your imac ;(
