2006 mac pro 1.1
dual core x2 3ghz xeon
4gb's ram (originally)
4 hhd's (two windows, the original osx, and one linux)
i purchased this from gainsaver in december last year.
a couple weeks ago i ran into the following problem:
i was playing GalCiv2 under windows 7 (i use refit to boot into it and not bootcamp) and my computer just turned off as if someone pulled the power. there was no surge in the house and nothing else in my room turned off. the computer would refuse to turn back on. upon plugging the power cored back in, it would click on, the lights would flash, and then click right back off with no chime. i proceeded to troubleshoot the problem. i first suspected it was the PSU but i no longer think that this is the case. after removing the bottom RAM tray and trying to start up it seemed to turn on. i then put it back in and instantly the problem returned. i decided it was a RAM issue at this point so i just removed the bottom two 1gb sticks from the tray and the computer worked again.
i figured i would deal with only 2gbs of ram until i can muster up some more money to buy a large amount of brand new memory. well, for two weeks i had no issues until just now. the problem returned. i went back to the ram trays and tried every possible ram slot, tried removing individual trays, etc. i dont know what to think now. i tried just one of each of what i thought were 2 working ram chips but neither would let the computer turn on.
im worried about making an expensive ram purchase at this point because i dont know if the ram is actually the problem anymore. i require this computer to make what little money i earn.
i've searched google for hours and cannot find a single person with the problem im facing...
does anyone have any insight? this is driving me mad.
EDIT:
a few days prior to the problem originally occouring, i had a blue screen of death under windows and it dumped the RAM
