2006 Mini for £45?

Hi,
Been looking around at the old minis so i can use one as a iTunes server and maybe file server but thats about it, come across a late 2006 mini 1.66 for £45, is this a good deal? would i be able to run iTunes and stuff on it?

For a Mini of that vintage, it's a good deal. They often go for 3 to 4 times as much. It'll work well for an iTunes media server. You'll even be able to watch some SD media on it. If you want to put some more money into it, you can upgrade it to a Core2Duo and be able to run Lion.

Ahh okay sounds cool, the bloke bought it on ebay as he thought his g4's power supply would work with it but it doesn't, so just thought are the power supplies expensive?

Without a power supply? I'm not sure how much those go for, but any 2006-2008 Mac Mini power supply will work. Maybe even a 2009 Mini's.

right okay just had a quick look seems to be around £40 so for about £85 i think this still might be a good buy might get it especially if you say i can upgrade to core 2 duos is there any guides around on how to do this?

There are a few guides on how to do it. The most powerful CPU for it goes for about $90 on eBay. It's a 2.33Ghz Intell T7600.

I did this on mine - upgraded to a C2D 2.0GHz just to keep the temps down - it does get toasty inside. Runs Lion, but Snow Leopard is probably easier on the hardware.

You can also flash the Mac Mini 2,1 firmware onto this - the hardware is the same, but this allows you to install more than 2GB of RAM if you need to.

If all you want to run is an iTunes server or a file server, I wouldn't waste any money upgrading the internals apart from maybe the hard drive.
